Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Savoury red fruits, cedar and clove spice, this has punch and structure, but is open and ready to drink at 11 years old, with melted tannins and a touch of tobacco leaf and white truffle on the finish. An atypical year in Napa, with more rain than usual, and the Carmanère didn't ripen enough to be included in the blend, but although this is lighter structured than the vintages that follow, there is a succulence on display that is delicious right now. Charles Thomas winemaker, Michel Rolland consultant, 85% new oak for ageing. Farmed organically since 1989 and biodynamically since 1996.
