Quinault L'Enclos - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

The 2021 Quinault L’Enclos is a potent, savory wine. The Merlot is way down this year and the Cabernets are up, which confers a decidedly savory character. The 2021 was aged in 500- and 600-liter casks, plus 25HL foudres. In short, Quinault offers a fine picture of the vintage. It’s all there— with plenty bright acids and tons of savory/earthy character.

Despite the challenges of the season, the 2021 Quinault l'Enclos has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of sweet cherries, berries, lilac and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and fleshy palate built around velvety tannins and concluding with a pure finish.

Shows rounded, inviting black cherry and plum compote notes, along with a light licorice root accent and prominent tobacco leaf elements. This version's fruit lightens up on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2026. 2,391 cases made, 330 cases imported.  –JM

While the Merlot at Quinault L’Enclos was harvested in ‘just ripe’ conditions, the Cabernet was fleshy, smooth and ripe. The result is a nicely-weighted and well-balanced wine with a smooth and uncomplicated palate. 16.5

From the team at Cheval Blanc, the 2021 Château Quinault L'Enclos is another impeccably made wine that has more red and blue fruits, some violet and peppery herb nuances, medium body, and the precise, focused, elegant style of the vintage front and center. It's finesse-driven, yet still brings texture and richness and will unquestionably be an outstanding wine.

Cohérent du début de bouche à la finale avec un tannin souple et frais doté d’un fruit soyeux déjà bien dégagé.

For classic sandy gravel soil, it is difficult to deliver a performance particularly impressive in 2021. But Quinault L'Enclos has shown us a sweet girl-like image with their outstanding craftsmanship. Both the soft red berry aromas and the fresh juicy taste are delights to the mouth, the body, and the mind. ???????????,?????2021??????????,?Quinault L’Enclos????????????????“???”????????????????,????????????????,?????

Cherries, plums, chocolate, nutmeg, flowers and mint on the palate. The fruits are sweet and rich, but the mid-palate is a bit light before you get to all the sweetness and lift in the finish. Yields are quite low at only 20 hectoliters per hectare, so the wine is going to be difficult to find as the production was cut almost in half. The wine blends 59% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2023-2036. 90-92

Here the warmer soils at Quinault, which can be hard to handle in hot years, helped encourage ripeness. This has a bright clarity to the fruit, waves of graphite, raspberry, loganberry, reserved but juicy in character, and very much in keeping with the new style of Quinault. 50% new oak (500l casks), and then the rest up to 5 years old so neutral oak impact. Long slow harvest, cool maturation, a very different kind of vintage. 20hl/h yield working in 100% organic.

The 2021 Quinault l'Enclos has a perfumed nose of cranberry jus, wild strawberry and blood orange, intense but maybe a missing a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry, and quite strict and slightly peppery, leading to an almost Left Bank finish. Fine.

The 2021 Quinault L'Enclos is exquisite, but is the kind of wine that needs a bit of time to be understood. Incisive, soaring Cabernet aromatics are quite vivid. Hints of rose petal, mint and dried savory herbs lead into a core of dark red fruit. Beautifully persistent, the 2021 is wild, even a bit exotic perhaps, but certainly long on personality. Challenging conditions reduced the crop by nearly 50%.

59% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2021 Quinault l'Enclos delivers aromas of cherries, strawberries and warm spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping palate that's supple and charming, with lively acids and a demonstrative, fruit-driven style. Some 80% of the blend is matured in foudres rather than barriques. It's produced by Cheval Blanc's winemaking team.

Beautifully fresh, floral black cherries on the nose with red strawberries and raspberries. Really delicate but expressive. Smooth and succulent, excellent acidity gives lift and life straight away before the liquorice and cooling mint come in. This has depth and power, clear concentration on the mid-palate but with a refinement, precision and sense of restraint to it. Balanced and harmonious in the mouth, super-easy to drink. Tannins are delicate and pair wonderfully with the acidity - they build the palate and push the flavour through. Excellent effort this year.
