Poggio Antico - Brunello Di Montalcino 2017

VINTAGE NOTES
Despite the extreme drought in one of the hottest summers of recent decades, maturation has been balanced thanks to the abundant water reserve (accumulated during winter) and the high altitude of our vineyards. All of these elements have contributed to enhancing Poggio Antico’s terroir, thus obtaining the right concentration and a pleasant fruity character in the wines. A vintage to be discovered.

Revisiting the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino three years after my first tasting reveals a dark and brooding bouquet of crushed ashen stores, dusty rose and dried strawberries. It's silky smooth, nearly creamy in feel, displaying a black fruit profile and savory herbal tones toward the close. Its minerality comes forward through the finish, along with tannins and hints of balsamic spice as the 2017 finishes long and still quite tense. This has found a better balance over the years, yet it still shows the dry warmth of the vintage.

Ripe, lush and expressive, this red features cherry, plum, earth, iron and tobacco flavors, with a solid line of tannins providing support. Long, picking up herbal accents on the finish. Fine balance. Best from 2025 through 2042. 666 cases made, 300 cases imported.

Poggio Antico is another one of those Montalcino estates that you will forever remember if you've been lucky enough to visit. The vineyards enjoy unobstructed views all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea (I think this is the only place in the appellation where you can see the water on a clear day). Fruit for the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is sourced from the I Poggi parcel with thin galestro and alberese soils. There is a lot of fresh fruit here, and the tannins are quite soft and supple. Production is 38,000 bottles.

Pure red/orange rim. Smells quite savoury with coffee, dark chocolate, bitter orange zest, and some Christmas spices, cloves and cinnamon - it smells excellent with the savoury spice doing most of the talking on the nose. Tension and precision on the palate, this is quite a serious style, still quite tight, all the elements are neatly packaged right now - not giving too much away. Such lovely sweetness to start though just before it closes down and becomes firm and taught. Tannins are well integrated and this has a real edge of quality, feels very sculpted and is still in that neat box not yet quite ready to open and expand. Excellent frame and good potential. Cool and fresh with depth.

An excellent Brunello in a difficult vintage. Clear caramelised raspberry notes, sweet smoky soy and orange peel, lovely freshness for such a hot year, and has a lightness of touch to the red cherry and cassis fruit. The 2016 release of this wine through the Place last September came six months after the release in Italy, so this Spring release is putting it back in rhythm. Owner Marcel van Poecke, in organic conversion. 18 months in bottle after ageing 30 months in barrel.

A thoroughly drinkable and refined 2017 Brunello with pure cherry, berry and floral character with hints of cedar. It’s full-bodied yet has good tension and focus with a long and beautiful finish. Drink or hold.
