2007 was a tricky vintage, and the wines lack full ripeness. The main problem is a lack of structure, which suggests they are best drunk fairly young. But this vintage of Pichon Baron is no lightweight. While the black fruit nose is muted and inexpressive, the medium-bodied palate is concentrated and suave. The lush and chocolatey fruit has reasonable weight for the vintage, and supple tannins give some structure if not much force. Long, and just about ready.

Ruby-red. Very fresh, high-pitched aromas of kirsch, licorice and minerals: smells structured! Then juicy, tight and penetrating; quite firm and youthful but not hard. The mid-palate offers lovely perfume and dark fruit energy. Plenty of backbone here but the firm tannins are essentially seamless and pliant. (91(+?) points)

Smoke, tobacco, berry and mineral aromas lead to a full body, with fine, silky tannins and a long finish. Polished and well-made. Slightly hollow, but attractive. Best after 2012.

Dark crimson. Blackish. Some density but some playfulness too. Pretty dry and solid. Not much lift. Very earthbound. Drink 2010-17.

(74% cabernet sauvignon and 26% merlot) Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of cassis, minerals, licorice and bitter chocolate, all lifted by a note of violet. Sweet, broad and round for the vintage, with lovely energy to the flavors of cassis, chocolate, minerals, menthol and flowers. Juicy and sophisticated wine with terrific balance and no dip in the middle. Finishes with subtle complexity and length and sweet, fine-grained tannins. A major success for the year.

Dunkles Rubingranat, fast schwarzer Kern, jugendliche violette Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand. In der Nase intensive dunkle Beerenfrucht, zart nach Orangenzesten, zeigt eine gute Komplexität, kraftvolle, gute integrierte Tannine, mineralisch, sehr gute Frische, bleibt gut haften, hat einiges Potenzial.

Epices, grillé, violette, séveux, bouche vive, tanins moelleux, tendu, fin, élégant, séveux en finale mais sans être serré; un Pichon plus élégant, très cabernet mais fin.
