Petit Cheval Blanc, un vin blanc audacieux

Depuis plus de 10 ans, le Château Cheval Blanc s’est mis au défi de produire un grand vin blanc sur ce petit vignoble de 6,6 hectares imbriqué dans le parcellaire de son ainé. Véritable déclinaison en blanc de l’identité de Cheval Blanc, il bénéficie de la même exigence et la même rigueur que son aîné. Il est issu d'un assemblage de 12 parcelles différentes, sur des sols sableux et argileux, où les 80% de sauvignon blanc et 20% de sémillon s’épanouissent parfaitement.

Le millésime 2023

Le millésime 2023 s'est déroulé sans excès climatiques. La pluviométrie a été assez régulière tout au long de l'année, et des précipitations légèrement excédentaires au mois d'août (65 mm) ont été très bénéfiques pour le bon déroulement de la maturation. En revanche, l'augmentation des températures moyennes confirme la tendance avérée du réchauffement climatique que l'on constate depuis quelques millésimes.

Cela participe à la précocité des vendanges, qui ont débuté le 23 août, et se sont déroulées de façon groupée, jusqu’au 29 août. Les vagues de chaleur de fin août ont donc accompagné la récolte.

Un léger effeuillage au soleil levant permet d'homogénéiser la maturité et d’inhiber la présence des notes "variétales ou thiolées" parfois attribuées au sauvignon blanc, pour donner naissance a` des jus floraux, fruités et minéraux.

The palate continues along the same path, kicking off with sea salt, peppery spice, citrus, pomelo, and crushed stone. The wine is sweet, vibrant, juicy, lively, long, and powerful, resting in the middle of austerity, purity, and elegance. The wine was produced from 73% Sauvignon Blanc and 23% Emilion, 13.5% Drink from 2026-2038. 96 Pts

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval Blanc is superb. I tasted it twice, once at the château and then a second time at a nearby restaurant, where the wine was much more expressive. The blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon really features the richness of Sémillon, especially with some air, while aging in larger-format wood softens the curves and tempers the greener side of Sauvignon Blanc.

Freshly zested lemon with grapefruit and orange aromas - so pronounced and really quite crystalline on the nose. At the back some green apple and white floral elderflower and acacia notes too. Clean and focussed, lovely precision and clarity to the flavours with such a strikingly poised texture. This has grip and zing but also just a touch of buttery, softness that adds weight to the body. Threads of nuttiness and wood enter giving accents and spiced edges. Piercing acidity adds lift and joins the layers of confit lemon, baked vanilla pecans, bitter grapefruit and soft cinnamon spice. Gorgeously complex and the flavour lasts for ages. It has everything you want from this cuvée which has found its rhythm. Tasted in a vertical going back to 2018 and this is the most impressive. Pale green gold, this is savoury and sappy, with a wave of white peach and nectarine pit. Structure and longevity, focus and clarity, this wine is now seriously finding its feet and setting itself apart. Early harvest, precision winemaking, the Sémillon comes through on the texture with the dominant flavours of tea leaf, chamomile, citrus, greengage and lime speaking to the Sauvignon Blanc.
