Petit Cheval Blanc - Bordeaux 2018

Background
In 2006, Château Cheval Blanc acquired Château La Tour du Pin, the two estates are separated only by a small road leading from Saint Emilion to Pomerol. It was found that 1.3872 hectares out of eight had a superb potential for red wines, with a terroir exactly like Cheval Blanc’s. This part of the vineyard was therefore absorbed into that of the Château Cheval Blanc in 2012. The rest, 6,6 hectares,
had very different, but just as interesting profile. The terroir was less dry there. This normally constitutes a handicap for red wines, but is an asset for whites. This is how in 2008 Petit Cheval Blanc was born, a genuine variation, in white, of the identity of Cheval Blanc, it’s a blend of some 13 different plots, on sandy and clay
soils, where 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% sémillon fit perfectly.
This year, more than 20% of the blend is made up of Semillon.

Vintage notes
After a very wet January, February was more in line with normal rainfall, but very cold. After a quite heavy rainfall in March, almost twice the seasonal normal, temperatures and rainfall returned to average in May and June. After June 15th, dry and hot weather set in for the summer. It lasted long beyond the harvest, which took place from August 28th to September 10th.

Tasting notes
The colour is clear, limpid, brilliant, a beautiful yellow-green. The first nose is discreet, dominated by citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit). By airing it, floral notes take over (lime blossom, lilac, white flowers). The “newborn” sémillon in the blend opens up a new aromatic register, made up of white-fleshed fruits (peach, pear), and a delicate note of acacia honey and beeswax. The wood, remarkably discreet, brings a mineral and smoky touch. The fresh and precise attack continues in the mid-palate with impressive amplitude and volume. The balance between fat and acidity brings great depth in the mouth, and the long finish is slightly enhanced by a nice bitterness.

The 2018 Le Petit Cheval Bordeaux Blanc is bright and finely cut, with pretty citrus, sage, mint and floral notes. Airy and beautifully lifted, the 2018 is a gorgeous dry white to drink now and over the next handful of years.

Cheval Blanc's relatively new white wine, the 2018 Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is a blend of 74% Sauvignon Blanc and 26% Sémillon. This is the first vintage that the Sémillon plantings have come online to make the blend. Profound notions of ripe pineapple, passion fruit and white peaches explode from the glass, followed by fragrant notes of lemongrass, lime blossoms and yuzu zest with a waft of sea spray. The palate is full-bodied with an alluring oiliness to the texture and layer upon layer of tropical fruits, citrus peel and minerals, marked by a refreshing line and finishing with loads of mineral sparks. Put aside all your preconceptions of "Bordeaux Blanc" and don't even try to compare it to Pessac-Leognan. This has its own gorgeous expression of these grapes, defying regional tradition. Give yourself over to the rich decadence of this flamboyant white that is at once without peers, but is also quintessentially Cheval Blanc.

Bright, fresh, lively yellow citrus, honeysuckle, green apple, lemon peel and a touch of vanilla on the nose and palate works here. The wine is lively, creamy, fresh and leaves you with a blast of fresh, sweet citrus in the finish. The wine blends 74% Sauvignon Blanc with 26% Semillon.

The 2018 Le Petit Blanc, the first vintage to include Sémillon, has an intriguing, well-defined bouquet of gooseberry, Nashi pear, glimpses of apricot blossom and praline emanating from the Sémillon. The palate is medium-bodied with good weight and a satisfying sense of harmony, plus a very slight oily texture. Not overly complex, but is taut and focused, leading into a lightly spiced, quasi-Alsace finish.

A wonderful and rather exotic white with aromas of pears, lychees, lemons and some green apples that follow through to the palate and show layers of dreamy texture and a long, flavorful finish. The texture is more like a red that a white. Fermented and aged in slightly larger oak barrels. This is a special wine and the best release so far. Very intense. 74% sauvignon blanc and 26% semillon. One for the cellar.

This shows a juicy edge, with a very focused mix of white peach, ginger, fennel and mandarin notes racing through. Chiseled finish. Drink now through 2026. –JM
