Adrianna Vineyard - Mundus Bacillus Terrae, une ode au Malbec

Créé en 1902, Catena Zapata est la plus ancienne propriété viticole d'Argentine dont la famille fondatrice est toujours propriétaire. L'architecture de la cave se distingue par son design pyramidal d'inspiration maya. Catena Zapata est connue pour son rôle de pionnier dans la résurrection du Malbec et dans la découverte de terroirs de haute altitude dans les contreforts andins de Mendoza.

Nommé après la plus jeune des filles de Nicolás Catena Zapata, Adrianna Vineyard est situé à près de 1 500 mètres d'altitude à Mendoza. Les sols de cette parcelle de 1,4 hectare sont remplis de dépôts calcaires et marins épars qui ont recouvert la région il y a des millions d'années. Les couches calcaires sont bien drainées et particulièrement riches en rhizobactéries, ces micro-organismes qui aident les racines de la vigne à résister au stress et à absorber les nutriments. D'où le nom de "mundus bacillus terrae" ou "élégants microbes de la terre".

Le millésime 2022 :

2022 a été une année exceptionnelle à tous les égards sur le plan qualitatif. Alejandro Vigil, chef de cave, déclare : « C’est la meilleure année que j’ai vécue. » Et pourtant, ce fut une année en montagnes russes, avec des conditions climatiques imprévisibles qui ont exigé une connaissance approfondie de chaque région et de chaque vignoble. Grâce à l’abondance des eaux de fonte des glaciers, nous avons pu maintenir un couvert végétal sain, et les rendements n’ont pas été réduits au-delà des effets du gel. L’automne, plus frais que d’habitude, a permis une maturation lente et complète des raisins, contribuant à la concentration et à l’équilibre exceptionnels de ce millésime.

Tasted last July, they have simply changed their release through the Place from September to March, and this tasting confirms a beautiful vintage of Adrianna, goes long of rose petals and spices, fragrant fennel and cracked white pepper. 1.4ha of limestone soils at 1,390m elevation, Laura Catena director, Alejandro Vigil winemaker. Fermentation in concrete with 50% whole cluster, followed by ageing in 75% French oak barrels, 25% in large oak casks

A little more cedar here and a more evident green Szechuan peppercorn note accompanying the cassis and blueberry fruits. A little violet and lily of the valley, a hint of wild thyme. Very pure and crunchy in its fruit signature. Quite lean and sleek in comparison with Nicolas Catena Zapata. Very linear and cooler at the core too, with if anything a little less depth and concentration. But it’s very long and tapering on the gracious finish, extended by the beady tannins. Juicy and hyper-fresh.

Fragrant and deep blackcurrants on the nose. Supple and generous on the palate, this is full of ripe but clean and crystalline fruit - blackcurrant, plum and sweet red cherries. There's an appealing chalky edge to the expression which adds nuance and texture. Still a little reserved but there's lots of finesse and elegance on show. Firm and a touch lean, straightforward and direct but with purity. Juicy and fresh, but not as immediately accessible as the main estate bottling at this point.

The single-varietal 2022 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes bounding out with bold, lifted notes of plum preserves, wild blueberries, and Bing cherries, giving way to hints of violets, wild sage, and oolong tea, with a waft of iron ore. The medium-bodied palate is lively and bright with perfumed black-berry flavors, supported by ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and energetic.

(Mendoza; 100% Malbec; from a tiny vineyard of 1.4 hectares at an altitude of 1390 metres on a limestone rich alluvial terroir; 13.5% alcohol; just 430 cases produced). A whiff of oak smoke. Unlit tobacco. Incense. Patchouli. Dark berry and stone fruits. Cracked black peppercorns. In the mouth, this is succulent, super-svelte, lithe, tense and charged. I love the whetstone minerality. Another vin de garde with considerable aging potential. Truly excellent and right up there with the best ever vintages of this wine. 98.

Wet stone, iron, iodine and wet earth with a touch of white pepper and cocoa powder to the deep blue and black fruit. Brooding now, but super fresh. Full-bodied and broad on the palate with real tension, full of fresh, fine-grained tannins. Extremely long and fresh. Drink from 2028.

The 2022 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae is a terroir-driven wine aptly named for the soil-dwelling bacteria that nourish the grape roots at this site. Sourced from a site planted in 1992 at 1,390 meters above sea level in Tupungato, Uco Valley, the 2022 was aged for 15-18 months in French oak barrels. This purple-hued Malbec is delicate and juicy, featuring notes of violet, lavender, cherry and plum, alongside hints of mountain herbs. It's juicy with a taut structure, leaving a trace of red fruit and darker elements. It finishes with a refined juiciness, showcasing a prominent chalky mouthfeel. This embodies the essence of modern high-altitude winemaking.
