The 2022 Château Montviel, after bottling, completely surprised me. The tannins, which were once angular during the En Primeur tasting, have now transformed into a silky, smooth texture. I tasted it three times and couldn’t find any flaws—truly remarkable. The soft, ripe black plum gently touches the palate, quickly followed by a burst of warming licorice and star anise spices. The sweetness of the fruit is complemented by a finely crafted complexity, making it impossible not to be captivated.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château Montviel is beautifully structured, offering dark currants, iron, tobacco, graphite, and deep minerality. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, it has ripe tannins and impressive richness. Vinified in concrete and fermented in oak barrels, then aged for 16 months in 100% new French oak, this will evolve well for 20+ years. Total production: 967 cases.

The 2022 Montviel has an open and expressive bouquet with black cherry, licorice and graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and silky smooth with pliant tannins and a smear of dark chocolate and mocha toward the finish. This will be ready to rock with just a couple of years in bottle. Fine.

Spiced dark plums, iron, paprika and dark chocolate on the nose. Ripe and quite open-grained with juicy, ripe fruit and very dusty tannins. Long and fragrant in the finish. Already approachable but better in one more year. Tasted from a half bottle.

The 2022 Montviel is sleek, elegant and polished. Today, the 2022 feels not totally put together, especially in the aromatics, which are a bit disjointed. I tasted two bottles with similar notes. There's something about Montviel that is not totally convincing.

Ripe and potent on the nose, forward and expressive, deep and seductive. Much lighter and brighter on the palate than the nose suggests with the acidity countering the ripe blackcurrant and cool blue fruits with cola, soft liquorice and herbal accents. Nicely controlled with bite, crunch and chew and a refreshing sense of minty freshness that lingers on the end. Calm at the moment, a little more sombre than some, but well defined and delivered. This sandy Pomerol wine is excellent in many aspects, although slightly hard on the finish. The fruit aroma is lively and the mouthfeel is soft and delicate, without requiring too much structure to be appealing. The aftertaste is enriched with the subtle flavors of licorice and star anise, adding a touch of complexity. I am looking forward to seeing how it performs after bottling.

The 2022 Montviel was picked 6-15 September. It offers airy black fruit, light smoky and pencil box aromas percolating through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tough tannins on the entry, black fruit laced with liquorice with a solid, quite firm finish that will need to soften during what will hopefully be a prudent barrel maturation.

Invitantes nuances fruitées dans le bouquet de Montviel avec des parfums de cerises et de fraises. L'attaque friande et crémeuse ne fait que confirmer les perspectives réjouissantes annoncées par le bouquet. Le vin est élégant, harmonieux, gourmand et bien soutenu par sa structure tannique. Un vin qui offre de belles perspectives de garde, mais il risque d'être bu avant !

What should be an outstanding Pomerol, the 2022 Château Montviel has ample black cherry, violet, incense, and leather notes in its complex, lively, full-bodied style. With solid concentration, ripe tannins, and terrific balance, it should round into form with just 3-5 years of bottle age.

The 2022 Montviel is an assemblage of various parcels scattered throughout Pomerol. Racy and succulent, with terrific freshness, 2022 impresses with its vibrancy. Dark red cherry, rose petal, mint and crushed rocks all race across the palate. I very much like the energy here. There’s a bit less oak impact in Montviel these days. It’s a style I find hugely appealing for a wine that requires minimal cellaring. Pretty floral and mineral notes lift the finish. Drinking window : 2025-2034
