Monbousquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

I never expected that warm, well-drained soil could produce such a fragrant wine in the 2022 vintage. I have never smelled so many violet scents in Château Monbousquet before. The structure is incredibly mild and the taste is extremely delicate, like a lotus root starch soup that melts in your mouth, with fruit pulp overflowing between the lips and teeth. The finish has the iconic richness of Vignobles Perse’s wines, adding a little more power to the already vivid taste. It is one of the best wines of the vintage of the region.

Black cherry, fennel, bitter dark chocolate, cedar and graphite, harvest September 15 to 27, so around one week earlier than usual, 30hl/h yield, In the spirit of Monbousquet, has an opulence to it. 50% new oak for ageing.

The 2022 Château Monbousquet is blockbuster stuff. It might not be for the classic traditionalists out there, but it's a “wow” wine for sure. Darker currants, chocolate, tobacco, crushed stone and graphite define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a deep, layered, opulent mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's a blockbuster yet seamless, layered, flawlessly balanced Monbousquet that, in my opinion, rivals any vintage of this cuvée ever produced. Drink bottles over the coming two decades.

2026-2044 95/100

The 2022 Monbousquet retains the opulence on the nose that was conspicuous out of barrel with precocious black cherry and blueberry scents. It's seductive, though not necessarily complex. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied, licorice-tinged note and wood tannins on the hard finish. My main gripe is that it feels Californian in style, just missing some typicité.

Intense blackberry and blueberry aromas. Perfumed. Full-bodied and layered with soft and silky tannins and pretty fruit with just a hint of coffee in the finish. Chocolate, meat and berries at the end as well. Really attractive now but will age beautifully. Fruit-forward style. Better after 2028.

The 2022 Monbousquet is sumptuous and exotic in the glass. Soft, plush contours lend notable immediacy. Blueberry jam, mocha, spice, new leather and licorice caress the palate as this open-knit, inviting Saint-Émilion shows off its considerable allure.

Supple, intense and focussed, a lovely clean sleek frame with bite and tang. Still a little restricted and compact with the tannins are the fore even though they're plump and massy with a cool liquorice edge to them and soft powdery texture. Full but retains a charm. Forward and enjoyable with salty stones on the finish. Ageing 28 years, 50% new oak, 50% one year barrels. Total acidity 3.25, 3.83pH. HVE3 certified.

The 2022 Monbousquet was picked 15 to 27 September at 30hL/ha (due to smaller berries) with 14.28% alcohol. Ripe and opulent on the nose, quite pure in style, this goes out to seduce, though it does not present the same complexity as some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet and candied opening, liquorice-infused black fruit that grips the mouth with blueberry on the finish. Quite firm with a lot of backbone. It needs to soften during élevage.

Deep colour. Intense dark plum liquorice, cedar aromas with dark chocolate notes. Well concentrated dark plum black currant cedar, touch Oregon wood flavours, and fine al dente, bittersweet tannins. Finishes gravelly with sweet fruit notes. 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc 15% Cabernet Sauvignon 14.28% alc

This is exuberant, with the creamy texture to the blackberry and black cherry fruits that is found so often in the vintag. Ink, graphite, chocolate, heading towards overly sweet which drops the momentum towards the finish. 3.83ph, 30hl/h yields. 50% new oak. Testing cover crops to look at lowering soil temperature, but mainly this year they turned the soil during the growing season to avoid it hardening in the heat.

The 2022 Monbousquet is made up of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon with a pH of 3.83. Yields were 30 hl/ha. Deep garnet-purple in color, it shoots out of the glass with bold scents of blackberry preserves, plum pudding, and licorice, plus hints of Indian spices and fragrant soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock full of bright, vibrant black fruits, framed by ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and spicy.

From tiny yields due to the frost, the 2022 Château Monbousquet is based on 70% Merlot and 15% Each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This ripe, medium to full-bodied, voluptuously styled beauty offers classic richness in its cassis and black cherry fruits as well as notes of chocolate, espresso, and leafy herbs. Beautifully balanced and concentrated, with velvety tannins, it's shockingly good.

The 2022 Monbousquet is gorgeous. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2022 offers up an exotic mélange of sumptuous red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and rose petal. Curvy and sumptuous, with striking fruit purity, Monbousquet is super-impressive in this tasting. Drinking window : 2025-2036

Purple flowers, black cherries, licorice, and cocoa create a showy nose. On the palate, the wine dark, lush, silky, and fresh. The fruits are ripe, creamy, and vibrant, with touches of spice, chalk and sweet, opulent black cherries. 2022 marks the 30th vintage of Monbousquet under the ownership of the Perse family. The wine blends 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.28% ABV, 3.83 pH. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2025-2042.

A rich wine with lots of tannins that are very fine and velvety, with deep fruit. Full and flavorful. Slightly salty and irony. Remains fresh and minerally. Some white pepper. Lead pencil.
