Coming from the Moulis region, the 2020 Château Maucaillou is a forward, charming, incredibly complex beauty delivering both red and black fruits, some tobacco and leafy herb notes, nicely integrated oak, soft tannins, and solid length on the finish. I don't see this making old bones, but it's going to deliver lots of pleasure over the coming 7-8 years.

Earthy, with a floral touch to the plums, herbs, tobacco and espresso on the nose and palate. The finish is focused on its core of sweet, red cherries and spice, which comes in with the endnote. Drink from 2023-2034.

Solid and centred showing notes of blackberries, wild myrtle, black pepper, sage, marjoram, black prunes and juniper berries. Medium bodied, light tannins and a juicy, linear finish. Better from 2024.

The 2020 Maucaillou is redolent of dried herbs, rose petal, mint, sage and sweet red berry fruit. This is an especially nuanced, floral Moulis with a good deal of classicism and vibrancy. Maucaillou is not as extroverted as some wines in the appellation, but that works to its advantage.

The 2020 Maucaillou never really clicks out of first gear on the nose despite aeration, a bit dusty and needing more vim. The palate is simple, smooth and pastille-like, but lacks real complexity and there's very little grip on the finish. Early-drinking. Tasted twice.

This has aromas of plums, balsamic, currants and paprika. Medium-bodied, fresh and bright with sinewy tannins and a savory, salty finish. Balanced. Drink from 2023.

Château Maucaillou, qui totalise 72ha, appartient à Pascal et Magali Dourthe. L'élevage de 18 mois
compte 50% à 70% de barriques neuves, selon les millésimes. Le vin se révèle de manière filigrane.
Il laisse apparaître des nuances d'élevage, mais ce sont bien les notes fruitées qui ont le dessus.
Bien soutenu par ses tannins, le vin est élégant, élancé et harmonieux. 2024-2034

Fresh red currant, herbal notes, mild oak, medium weight with youthful and grippy tannin, rather long but a bit on the vegetal side, should certainly improve from further ageing.

The 2020 Maucaillou is a beautiful and promising wine. The Maucaillou is not as boisterous as many 2020s, but it more than makes up for that with its sophisticated, polished feel and overall persistence. Sweet red cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco and mint all grace this wonderfully classy Moulis.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Intense nose with initially restrained fruit, however a good concentration which promises a rather exciting future evolution. Very elegant yet persistent on the palate with ripe tannins, restrained fruit and fine spiciness.

The 2020 Maucaillou has a little dustiness on the nose that thankfully blows off after five minutes. Light blackberry and earthy scents emerge, though they would benefit from more vigor. The palate is underpinned by dry, firm tannins, and missing a little flesh and depth toward the finish, which feels bitter at the moment.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Maucaillou opens with notes of Bing cherries, ripe raspberries and boysenberries with suggestions of dried Mediterranean herbs, wild mushrooms and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate has plenty of red fruit and herbal sparks on offer with a chewy texture and crisp backbone, finishing a little firm and green.
