The 2004 Château Margaux is a vintage that I tasted earlier this year at the château, although here it is a rare chance to savor the wine from neck to punt. What a joy. It is certainly open for business on the nose, leaning towards red rather than black fruit, violet and peony, cedar and light just a touch of tobacco. The palate is initially fleshy and caressing, a sensual Margaux. Yet after 30 minutes, it begins to firm up and reveal more backbone and tannic structure. It has unerring purity with a divine, poised satin-textured finish. This surely stands as one of the wines of the vintage.

The 2004 Château Margaux has an enticing nose with mainly red fruit and a light cedar and irony tincture. It's mature but still vigorous and has plenty in the tank. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, tensile entry. It's irony (again) with a welcome spiciness on the finish. More concentrated than you might anticipate, this is drinking beautifully now but will clearly drink for another 20 to 30 years.

The 2004 Chateau Margaux is one of the dark horses of the decade. This bottle, which came directly from the château cellars, accidentally landing in my hands (long story), reconfirms the caliber. The bouquet takes a little time to find its feet, eventually offering richly layered scents with raspberry, blackberry, crushed rock and pencil shavings. It has tangible coolness, not powerful, but displaying exquisite delineation. The palate is wonderfully balanced, more pliant than recent vintages, fresh and tensile, with a little more firmness on the finish compared to my previous encounter six years earlier. This is well worth seeking out, and it will give 20 to 30 years of pleasure.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle. The Château Margaux 2004 has an outstanding graphite-tinged bouquet that has much more vigour than its peers. It just billows from the glass, although you might be fooled into thinking it was a Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with fine freshness and structure. This is nothing flash of ostentatious about this First Growth – rather it is neat and tidy, what you might call a "functional" Château Margaux that channels all its effort into tension, mineralite and persistency. In this regard, it is a total success. Tasted March 2014.

A similar note to the bottle last March. A lovely fragrant nose with blueberries, violet and yet again that faint hint of oyster shell. Superb definition – a bouquet that vindicates a First Growth wine. The palate is sleek, beautifully defined, wonderful poise with pure black fruits, a touch of glycerine with hints of earth and coca on the finish. Superb length. A glorious Château Margaux. Drink 2018-2030+ Tasted November 2008.

Aufhellendes Rubin.

The supple-textured 2004 Chateau Margaux is reminiscent of the 2001 or 1999. It exhibits a superb blue/purple color to the rim as well as sweet aromas of flowers, blueberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and smoke, superb fruit intensity, medium body, classic elegance, and silky, sweet tannin in the long finish. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more.

Bright red-ruby. Knockout nose features boysenberry, currant, cedar, graphite and mocha. Suave, gentle and sweet, already displaying ineffable inner-mouth perfume. The 17% merlot component injects a silky component, and the oak element adds a complementary sweetness. Complex, lush, horizontal finish saturates the mouth with flavor. It was not clear to me in April that the 2006 would exceed this-and it will certainly take longer to reach full maturity in bottle.

Subtle and complex aromas of crushed raspberry, milk chocolate and cigar box. Full-bodied, silky and refined, with layers of fruit and seductive tannins. Very long. A Margaux with finesse and reserve. Best after 2011. 12,500 cases made.

The 2004 Chateau Margaux, which has put on weight since I tasted it a year ago, is a superb example of why in certain cool, late ripening vintages, the en primeur tastings are easily 4-6 weeks too soon. At the January, 2006 tasting, the wine exhibited a gorgeous nose of licorice, white flowers, black currant liqueur, and subtle new oak. This aromatic, medium to full-bodied, superbly concentrated Margaux reminds me of a lighter version of the 1996. Precise, extremely well-delineated, beautifully pure, and, as the French would say, tres Margaux, it should be at its apogee between 2009-2028.
