The 2005 Léoville Poyferré has quite a perfumed and minty bouquet, a common trait across many of the Left Bank '05s. Firm tannins frame plenty of tarry black fruit on the boldly styled palate. The 2005 is fresh but a little more tannic than the wines made nowadays. Dense and a little sinewy on the finish, this will certainly require decanting if broached now.

The 2009 Léoville-Poyferré is intense but beautifully controlled on the nose with an enticing but not exotic mélange of red and black fruit laced with pencil box and smoke. Superb intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, brisk and spicy, brimming with energy and fanning out gloriously towards the finish. There is nothing overblown or extravagant, yet it harnesses the precocity of the vintage to glorious effect. Drinking supremely well now and for a number of years. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier.

The 2005 Léoville-Poyferré really needed a number of hours to come together. An old school, powerful Saint-Julien, the 2005 Léoville-Poyferré packs a serious punch. Inky dark red fruit, iron, smoke, cedar, mint and white pepper lend striking aromatic depth. This virile, tannic Saint-Julien is a bruiser, but it is also pretty impressive. Tasting it feels like taking a step back in time.

Léoville Poyferré’s dense ruby/purple 2005 is soft, round and juicy, with lots of blackcurrant fruit, plum and Asian spice. It is medium to full-bodied and, along with Léoville Las Cases and Saint-Pierre, probably one of the best St.-Juliens I tasted in this retrospective. It is surprisingly supple and accessible. Drink it over the next 15 or so years.

Purplish crimson. Scented and beguiling. Far from a heavyweight and with lots of tannin but with some lift too. Super clean. Well judged! 13.5% Drink 2023-2045

Tasted single blind at Southwold. Again, the nose has shut down like the previous wine. Blackberry, cedar, a touch of animal fur – this should be so incredibly complex in a few years time. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, very well balanced and supple. Nice elegant, smooth vivacious blackberry and cedar finish. Its sensuality belies the turbo-charged engine at the heart of this wine. Great length. Superb. Drink 2018-2040. Tasted January 2009.

Saturated ruby-red. Deeply pitched aromas of black cherry, currant and coffee. Sweet, silky and full, but with lovely ripe acidity to frame the dense black fruit, mocha and mineral flavors. Showing a glossy aspect to its fruit that is exhilarating, even if this deep, fairly tannic wine is a bit sullen at present, despite showing excellent back-end breadth. This is a full 13.5% alcohol; the petit verdot component reached 14.5% potential alcohol in 2005, said Cuvelier, who describes 2005 as "a year of sun but not surmaturite.

Although I still prefer the 2003, the 2005 Leoville Poyferre is a gorgeously opulent, approachable wine that is far less massive and austere than its two siblings. The most seductive, approachable, and charming of the three Leovilles, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of mocha, black chocolate, creme de cassis, licorice, and toasty oak. Full-bodied with gorgeous upfront fruit in addition to impressive levels of melted, well-integrated tannin, it should be at its finest between 2015-2035.

A deep black/garnet hue with bright youthful rim. The nose is far less extrovert than the 2003 but probably has superior focus and delineation, more sense of minerality that infuses that incredibly pure blackberries and blueberries. The palate has brilliant balance, again bewitching purity with filigree tannins that belie their structure and the sheer density of the wine. Lacquers the mouth on the finish, maintains its sense of poise and tension with hints of chocolate and coca on the finish. Stunning. Drink 2020-2040+ Tasted March 2008.
