The 2023 Lassègue comes across a little blowsy on the nose compared to its peers, perhaps just pushed a little too much in the winery? The palate is ripe and sweet on the entry, but again there is a distinct lack of grip and structure, certainly no sense of tension or finesse on the finish. Just pushed unnecessarily, but it might appeal more to a hedonistic palate.

A transparent, rich and clean red with blackberry, blueberry, meat and spice aromas. It’s medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a long and flavorful finish. Tight and muscular, with integrated tannins. 50% cabernet franc, 43% merlot, and 7% cabernet sauvignon. Needs three or four years to soften and open.

Coming from the talented Seillan family (also behind the quality at Verite in Sonoma), the 2023 Château Lassegue should be brilliant stuff, offering a dense ruby/plum hue as well as powerful aromatics of spiced red and black fruits, chocolate, and crushed stone. It's a big, rich, textured, medium to full-bodied 2023 with velvety tannins, terrific overall balance, and outstanding length. This cuvée comes from clay and limestone soils in the southern part of the appellation and is 50% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, aging in 50% new oak. It's the first vintage with a majority of Cabernet Franc.

Lassègue (St Emilion; 50% Cabernet Franc; 43% Merlot; 7% Cabernet Sauvignon; pH 3.7; 14% alcohol; aging in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new and which are sourced from 15 different forests; tasted at Lassègue with Pierre and Hélène Seillan). This is the first time that this is majority Cabernet with recent replanting, the aim being to adapt the vineyard to global climate change; it’s also the first vintage as a Grand Cru Classé. Violet, crushed rose petals and blood orange intermingle with the dark berry and stone fruits. Green peppercorns bring their own freshness. The florality is revealed slowly and progressively. In the mouth this is both fluid and crystalline, more delicate than it used to be. It is both mineral and spicy on the finish, with the salinity of black liquorice. Very clean and linear on the finish after the amplitude, opulence and richness of the attack and mid-palate. Nicely chiselled by the calcaire tannins. Very beautiful, showing nice restraint and glorious in its floral Cabernet fruit – one sees the future of the appellation here. And we have something resembling the tannic quality of Vérité itself. Lifted and elegant.

Crushed rocks, mint, flowers, espresso, and cherries are what you find in this vivacious, mineral-driven, bright, wine. The finish delivers a touch of salt, with the sweet red fruits, licorice, and spice. Drink from 2027-2040. 91-93 Pts.

Mouthwatering from the first moments, showcasing vibrant dark berry fruits shot through with fennel, red saffran, smoked earth, aniseed, gooseberry. One of my favourite wines of the vintage in St Emilion, just so full of pleasure, will easily last for decades but not need to wait too long before starting to enjoy. 50% in new oak barrels. harvest September 18 to 28. Highest amount of Cabernet Franc in this wine to date, at 50% of the total blend, 3.67ph.

The 2023 Lassègue is terrific. In fact, it is one of the best wines I have tasted here. A rush of inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, mocha, cloves and chocolate are all dialed up to the maximum in this decidedly opulent Saint-Émilion. Lassègue is not at all subtle, but it has a ton to offer for lovers of rich, heady wines. This is the first vintage in which Cabernet Franc drives the blend. Oak impact, thankfully, has been moderated as well. It remains a pretty lush, super-ripe wine, but it is impeccably balanced. This a terrific effort from Pierre Seillan.

This is very linear and compact with lush fruit, but the tannins and acidity frame it so nicely. It's medium-bodied with excellent length and energy. The finish is really fine. 50% cabernet franc, 43% merlot and 7% cabernet sauvignon. Better than 2022.
