Lascombes - Margaux 2020

The 2020 Lascombes has a discrete, finely delineated bouquet that unfolds in the glass with blackberry, bilberry, crushed violet and a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with sour cherry and brown spices on the entry. It's drier than expected with espresso notes on the finish. Although the nose has more pedigree than the palate, this does need time and is superior to many vintages from the previous decade. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Lascombes offers up rich aromas of blackberry preserve, mint chocolate and plum liqueur, followed by a medium to full-bodied, firm and heavily extracted palate, concluding with a chewy, somewhat drying finish. If the inherent charm of the 2019 vintage did much to mitigate this heavy-handed style of winemaking, the tannins of 2020 are less forgiving.

Open-knit and direct, with a friendly display of plum and cassis notes carried by a polished structure. Ends with light violet and singed vanilla details. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2034. 26,000 cases made.

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2020 Château Lascombes is clearly another brilliant wine from this château that readers will love. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as a classic bouquet of cassis, dried flowers, freshly sharpened pencils, and obvious minerality, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, lots of building tannins, and a great finish. It's going to need 4-6 years at a minimum but is some serious Margaux brilliance that will have 30 years of longevity.

Still quite oaky at the moment, so it takes a little effort to find its floral, spice and dark cherry essence. Round-in-texture with a lush, opulent, albeit, oaky finish, perhaps with time, the wood will become better integrated. Drink from 2025-2045.

Elegant and refined showing notes of lavender, hibiscus, guaranà , linden, lemon, citron, pink grapefruit and pomegranate. Medium bodied, well extracted perfectly mature tannins and a finish which will come out over time but already shows its true quality. Better from 2025.

The 2020 Lascombes is a deep, sensual wine. Blackberry fruit, lavender, espresso and chocolate are all amplified in this exotic Margaux. Plush and racy, with soft tannins, Lascombes shows off the more opulent side of the appellation. The 2020 is not super-complex, but it is easy to appreciate and drink.

The 2020 Lascombes undergoes malo in barrel (using the Oxoline rack system whereby the barrels can be rotated on wheels) and matured in 60% new oak. The bouquet has opened up nicely since I tasted it in barrel with pressed violet scents infusing the blackberry and raspberry fruit, touches of incense coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, much more flesh than the Deuxième Vin, fine backbone with ample weight on the graphite-tinged finish. There's a little more classicism compared to older vintages, a bit more terroir expression. Give this 4-5 years in bottle.

Aromas of crushed blackcurrants and cherries with dried Provence herbs, lavender, raw walnuts and spiced cedar. Graphite, too. Full and muscular with a broad-shouldered, velvety tannin structure that goes on for minutes. Textured and chalky with a lingering finish. Very polished. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 5% petit verdot. Try after 2027.

s'assume ! 2025-2037

Dark fruity and intense with roasted coffee bean, meaty notes, balanced oak and a wealth of crushed dark berries. An ample and rich palate, layered in a modern and supple style with fine balance. Long and powerful finish.

The 2020 Lascombes is gorgeous. Inky and deep, the 2020 is brimming with character. There is a bit less opulence than in some recent vintages, but that is not a bad thing. And plenty of inky dark fruit, leather and spice flavor. The 2020 is an attractive, mid-weight Lascombes with a good deal of richness and fine balance. Lavender, cloves, spice and new French oak linger on the suave finish.

A terrific success in the vintage, the 2020 Château Lascombes sports a dense purple color as well as gorgeous black and blue fruits interwoven with plenty of toasty oak. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has velvety tannins, good mid-palate density, and beautiful overall balance. It’s one of those wines that brings plenty of ripe fruit yet always has a solid sense of elegance and purity. Tasted twice.

The 2020 Lascombes has a straightforward, delineated bouquet of gentle red berry fruit laced with Earl Grey and very subtle ash scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fine acidity, cracked black pepper sprinkled over the black fruit and a little bluntness on the finish. I stayed with this sample for an hour to see if it would gain more flesh, but it somehow remains a little austere.

A château that is used to finding charm and exuberance whatever the vintage, and it has avoided overly concentrated flavours. There is plenty of charm to the cassis and damson fruit but they are a little heavy through the mid palate which emphasises the grilled coffee and chocolate and adds bitter touches to the end of palate. Serious. A yield of 40hl/ha.

Full-bodied, round, lush, rich and polished, the fruit is ripe, sweet and intense. But there is a strong oak component in the finish that is going to need time to integrate. 90-92

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Lascombes comes skipping out of the glass with bright, cheery scents of raspberry coulis, blackberry preserves and fresh blackcurrants, plus suggestions of pencil shavings, dried roses and charcuterie with a waft of bouquet garni. The medium to full-bodied palate has great tension and energy, delivering crunchy red and black fruit layers and a firm, grainy frame, finishing long with an herbal lift.
