Tasted at the château for a 30-year vertical tasting. The 1995 Lagrange, a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 13% Petit Verdot picked between 21 September and 10 October, has a perfumed and quite floral bouquet with fine definition. It does not possess a great deal of vigour, but it is demure and pretty. The palate is medium-bodied with a caressing, smooth texture on the entry. There is not a great depth and the Cabernet seems to be running on two cylinders, although the finish is nicely composed with bay leaf and sandalwood on the light finish. Fine. Drink now-2020. Tasted March 2014.

A classic wine to drink now. Plenty of dark berry and spice character. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a beautiful depth and intensity. Fresh earth and sweet tobacco aftertaste.

The 1995 Lagrange is similar to the 1996, but the fruit is sweeter, the acidity lower, and the wine less marked by Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a deep ruby/purple. The wine boasts a roasted herb, charcoal, black currant, mineral, and new oak-scented nose. Medium to full-bodied and ripe, with copious quantities of jammy black cherry and cassis flavors presented in a medium-bodied, low acid, moderately tannic style, this well-endowed, purely made wine requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.

Wonderfully crafted, with mint, blackberry and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, with loads of berry flavor and velvety tannins. Best after 2001.

This appears to be the first outstanding Lagrange made since 1990. The opaque purple color is followed by copious quantities of sweet, thick, lavishly-oaked, charcoal-scented, black currant fruit that is still straightforward and one-dimensional. Fat, full-bodied, and laced with large quantities of tannin, this is a muscular, somewhat brutish style of wine that should soften with another 3-4 months in cask. It will offer outstanding drinking in a full-bodied, boldly-styled format. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020. Last tasted 1/97

The 1995 displays Lagrange's love affair with lavish quantities of toasty, smoky new oak. The wine exhibits a dense color, sweet, toasty aromas intertwined with plenty of ripe, jammy black fruits, medium body, and low acidity. The fleshy 1995 looks to be an excellent, possibly outstanding wine that should drink well young and keep for 15-20 years.
