Hêtre (BIO-ORGANIC) - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2022

L'Hêtre
Une propriété appartenant à la famille Thienpont (Le Pin à Pomerol, L'If à Saint-Emilion), qui a rachetéen 2016 cette propriété à Castillon : Châteua Goubeau.

Le premier millésime produit fut donc 2016, et la propriété fut renommée l'Hêtre.

Le vignoble de 15 ha est entré en conversion biologique en 2009, et 2012 fut le premier millésime certifié biologique. Les vignes sont agées, 45 ans en moyenne, plantées à forte densité sur des terroirs argilo calcaires très qualitatifs, produisant ainsi de très grands vins, toujours gourmands, frais et racés.

Le millésime

Le millésime 2022 est caractérisé par son climat exceptionnellement sec durant l’ensemble de la période végétative de la vigne et jusqu’aux vendanges. Les vieilles vignes, à l’enracinement profond sur nos terroirs argilo-calcaires, constituant le cœur de L’Hêtre ont su conserver un équilibre entre maturité, concentration et fraîcheur.

Aromas of crème de cassis, pencil shavings and licorice introduce the 2022 L'Hêtre, with a medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated palate built around lively acids and concluding with a discreetly carnal finish. It's a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The 2022 L'Hetre is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that's from more limestone soils, with the élevage in 30% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Gorgeous black raspberries, black truffle, tobacco, and damp earth are just some of the nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ripe, chalky tannins, and a great finish.

The 2022 L'Hêtre comes from 28-hectares of vines with some Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon currently being planted. This has a lovely bouquet with subtle violet and estuarine scents permeating the dark berry fruit tones. It's quite mineral-driven with a hint of ceps. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. There's fine structure here with a judicious sprinkling of white pepper on the finish. This is very fine.

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 L'Hetre is expressive, bold and punchy, all of which give it tons of charm. Crushed flowers, mint, blood orange, sage and white pepper lend notable aromatic brilliance to play off the wine's richness. More than anything else, I am impressed by the wine's energy and vibrancy. Clean mineral notes shape the taut, salivating finish.
