Les Griffons de Pichon Baron - Pauillac 2022

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron :

En 1987, Axa Millésimes rachète le Château Pichon Baron

After tasting this wine, I immediately understand that winemaker Pierre is eager to show elegance in 2022, he wants us to see a narcissus blooming in the midst of the heat. With a gentle swirl of the glass, the flow of cherry juice and huckleberry pulp are running along the slender body. The tannin structure is highly polished like a reflecting mirror. Compared to past vintages, Les Griffons de Pichon Baron exudes more softness, making it highly drinkable even at a young age. I believe that within 2-3 years of bottling, it’s capable to enjoy to the fullest.

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is more Cabernet-driven, echoing the style of the grand vin, as opposed to the more supple, forward Tourelles. Offering up aromas of sweet dark berries and espresso roast, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, built around powdery structuring tannins.

Medium to full intensity ruby red, intense and concentrated, this is muscular and fully charged, good slate texture, with smoked caramel and mocha showing the fingerprint of the vintage. 40% new oak, Pierre Montégut director.

Also brilliant, the 2022 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron brings a touch more structure and density than the Tourelles. Cassis, graphite, leather, and cedar pencil notes, as well as a beautiful violet note, define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, pure, precise mouthfeel, and a great finish. It’s another impeccably made, pure, flawlessly balanced wine from this château that I’d be happy to drink any time over the coming 15+ years.

2028-2047 94/100

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron was very impressive from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a kind of unassuming bouquet that unfolds in the glass. This is very nuanced, with hints of black truffle filtering through the black fruit and a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and beautifully balanced with a fresh, slightly citric finish. I like the energy in this Les Griffons and it should age well in bottle.

A plush but refined nose with sweet blackberries and cherries. Ripe and flavorful, this has restrained berries and fine tannins throughout. Long, firm and posh. 50% merlot, 66% cabernet sauvignon and 4% petit verdot. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is super-refined from start to finish. Everything speaks to balance. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, mocha, dried flowers and blood orange infuse the 2022 with notable character and class. Silky, polished tannins wrap it all together in grand style. The 2022 spent 18 months in French oak, 40% new, an approach that worked beautifully.

Smells heady and very aromatically expressive, rich with black fruits but also inky touches, pencil led and flint. Smooth and supple, the tannins have bite and grip to them, a stoniness as well as liquorice tang to the blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, but also cool mint and blueberry touches that keep the freshness. Clear strength, this is not a simple or necessarily charming wine, it has a serious side with tension and a streamlined nature. Lots of precision and structure but also fruit purity, balancing acidity and generosity. Ageing 18 months in French oak, 40% new, 60% one wine.

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron represents 22% of the production and is matured in 40% new oak. It has a very focused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed violet and a light marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with sculpted tannins, very tensile, intense yet weightless toward the long graphite-infused finish. This is just superb.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is deep garnet-purple in color. It is a little closed to start, with subtle notions of juicy black and red plums, warm cassis, and forest floor plus a touch of clove oil. The medium-bodied palate has a lively line lifting the earth-laced black fruit layers, finishing with a touch of chewiness.

A solid step up over the Les Tourelles, the 2022 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is also Merlot-dominated and checks in as 50% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot that will spend 18 months in 40% new French oak. Gorgeously pure cassis, smoked earth, graphite, tobacco, and crushed stone define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a layer, concentrated mid-palate, fine tannins, and a great finish. The purity and precision here are truly something.

The 2022 Les Grifons de Pichon Baron is super-impressive. Silky, medium in body and gracious, the 2022 is incredibly charming. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice are beautifully delineated. This classy Pauillac is showing very well today. The Grifons is a serious second wine that will benefit from a few years of cellaring. Drinking window : 2026-2037

This elegant expression of Pauillac displays its wealth of cassis, blackberries, chocolate, and flowers easily in the perfume. The palate, however, is where this shines. The layers of ripe, sweet, crème de cassis, peppery, currants, licorice, dark cocoa, and a touch of citrus meld together perfectly. The wine is refined, clean, packed with fruit, reasonably forward, and filled with character. The wine was created from a blend of 50% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot. 14.5% ABV, 3.57 pH. Drink from 2027-2045.

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the more serious of the estate's two second wines, with Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot dominating the blend. Revealing aromas of dark berries, cherries, spices and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with powdery tannins and a more structured profile than Les Tourelles.
