The 1995 Grand Mayne has a much better bouquet compared to the bottles of the Eighties with vibrant scents of red cherries, dark chocolate and light minty aromas. This could be classed as the first of the modern-day vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, grainy in texture with cedar-infused red fruit laced with mint. It just dips a little early at the finish but otherwise this 1995 continues to give pleasure. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.

Notes de racines et de réglisse au nez. La bouche est confite, portée en finale par une jolie fraîcheur, un grain tonique. Encore dissocié en dégustation pure, il s'accordera bien sur des viandes grasses à table.

In-your-face aromas of toasted oak, ripe berries and chocolate. Full-bodied, with loads of ripe fruit and a long, smoke and berry finish. Absolutely moreish. Best from 2002 through 2006.

This wine appears to be a return to the clean, pure, rich, concentrated, massive style of the 1989 and 1990 Grand-Maynes. Fortunately, no moldy cardboard, musty wood aromas were detectable in several tastings of this wine. The color is a superb, thick, rich, opaque black/purple. The wine is chewy, full-bodied, superbly concentrated, and in need of 5-6 years of cellaring. The 1995 Grand-Mayne should prove to be a sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016. Last tasted 11/97

An unqualified sleeper of the vintage, the opaque purple-colored 1995 Grand-Mayne displays a sweet, creamy, black raspberry-scented nose with subtle notes of smoky, toasty oak. Both powerful and elegant, this wine exhibits layers of richness, nicely integrated acidity and tannin, and an impressive full-bodied, long finish. This offering should be drinkable early, and keep for over a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2013.

Let me make it clear that I am an admirer of the Noney family and the exceptional efforts they have put forth at Grand-Mayne. The 1989 and 1990 (both of which I recommended and purchased for myself) are superb wines, and I believe the 1995 will be close in quality to them. However, one of the problems I have alluded to in my Bordeaux reports is that certain chateaux have had problems in some vintages with respect to a considerable number of their wines having developed various degrees of unattractive, moldy cardboard/wet dog/musty wood aromas that obliterate much of the wine's fruit character and appeal. Readers can refer back to some of my comments over the last decade about many of the Camensac vintages in the eighties, Ducru-Beaucaillou between 1986 and 1990, and a handful of other properties. Grand-Mayne appears to have had a similar outbreak of this distracting aromatic plague in both 1993 and 1994. I should also point out that all noses are not created equal. Some readers may be less sensitive to these smells than I. The 1995 exhibits a nearly opaque purple color with a black center. Intense, black-raspberry, cassis aromas jump from a glass of this medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated wine with a sweet mid-palate, and a long, deep, massive finish. It is a highly-extracted, beautifully pure, moderately tannic wine with low acidity and plenty of grip. It will be approachable when released next year and should last for 12-15+ years. It is unquestionably a sleeper of the vintage.
