Gloria - Saint-Julien 2021

The 2021 Gloria is terrific and everything it should be. Floral and spice notes open first, revealing a mid-weight, slightly nervous Gloria. Medium in body, with good depth, the 2021 offers fine balance. Tobacco, cedar, mint and red cherry linger.

I continue to love what this estate does, and their 2021 Château Gloria is certainly worth checking out. Revealing a deep ruby/purple hue to go with ample ripe black cherry and currant fruit, it's medium-bodied, has a plump, round, layered mouthfeel, and solid ripeness in its tobacco, spicy oak, and graphite-driven aromas and flavors. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this pleasure-bent, balanced, rock-solid 2021 will keep for 10-15 years.

The 2021 Gloria has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of cherries, cassis and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless palate built around ripe tannins and nicely integrated acids. It's a charming middleweight that will offer plenty of appeal over the next decade and beyond.

Excellent depth for 2021. Refined and complex with aromas of graphite, cassis, mineral, chili chocolate, white pepper and cigar box. Fresh and juicy, with fine, polished tannins. Long, refined and nuanced. Medium body. Fine tannins. An overachiever for the vintage. Drink or hold.

Open-knit, with crushed mulberry fruit, though a cedary grain and singed savory notes keep this on the trim side throughout. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2026. 16,000 cases made.  –JM

Juicy and clean, a lovely light handed touch to this, strawberry, creamy raspberry and fragrant cherries. Straight but not lean, there's no harsh austerity here, all in balance with a silky texture. Missing a touch more vibrancy but I like the acidity, fruit purity, soft minerality and sense of gentle calmness here. Totally likeable and easy to drink.

There is a large percentage of Petit Verdot in this wine, and it serves to add colour, depth and impact. However, I wonder if it has also taken away a little elegance? While there is an impressive fanfare on the nose and palate, there is not quite as much behind the façade, and the reasonably short finish marks this is a good wine but not a keeper. 16

I like the firmness and polish to this, with medium body, creamy tannins and a delicious finish. Racy and refined.

The 2021 Château Gloria offers up medium-bodied aromas and flavors and darker, almost cassis-like fruits as well as leather, toasted spice, and background oak. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has good concentration, the vintage's pretty, elegant, balanced style, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

Medium-deep crimson. Intense dark cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant with spicy vanilla roasted walnut notes. Smooth and inky textured with ample redcurrant cassis, mocha notes, fine chewy textures, attractive mid-palate richness and long mineral acidity. Finishes firm with very good mineral length. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 14% petit verdot. 14 months in around 40% new French oak. 13.1% alc

Gloria 2021 presents some clear and lively fruit scents, like the especially pleasing strawberry and red plum, as well as hints of cinnamon and licorice. The palate is relatively tender and airy, emitting some vague sensation of delicacy. If you like Burgundy-style wines, the 2021 Gloria will be to your liking. Fresh, bright and savory, the red fruits here are soft, sweet and lifted. Medium-bodied, early drinking, bright and crisp, there is an herbal, olive and espresso edge to the soft, polished red fruits that you find in the end notes. The wine blends 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2024-2036. 89-91

The 2021 Gloria is the first vintage where the vineyard farming has moved to organic viticulture (though there are no plans for certification.) It was picked from September 27 to October 9, stopping for 5 days between the Merlot and Cabernets, with a large percentage (14%) of Petit Verdot from a massal selection. It has a very pure and perfumed nose thanks to the contribution of the Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied and quite dense for the vintage, displaying fine body and weight, gentle grip and a touch of graphite toward the finish. Very fine.

The 2021 Gloria is charming, as it so often is. Bright and energetic, the 2019 has so much to offer. The purity of the red-toned fruit is so appealing. Gloria can show some hard edges when it is young, but the 2021 is very nicely balanced for a young Saint-Julien.

Charming and extroverted, the 2021 Gloria bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, sweet berries, fresh mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's a lively, seamless wine that wears its heart on its sleeve. This blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc seems likely to emerge as a sleeper of the vintage. Tasted four times.

A darkly herbal nose, blackcurrant and brambles. Juicy and alive on the palate, this is quite high-toned with a sharpness to the fruit yet also a pencil lead-chalkiness giving this push pull of brightness as well as a savoury touch. I like the clarity of flavours, the precision that comes across - it's playful and fun and all seems in balance with the minerality showing through on the palate too. A little light on the mid palate, but easy to like.
