Fonroque (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Château Fonroque has consistently maintained its quality in recent years, invariably showcasing a refreshing sensation akin to fresh fruit and a supremely smooth acidity in various weather conditions, sometimes making it challenging to discern subtle differences between vintages. The 2022 vintage is a prime example of such excellence; its tart jujube juice and sour plum soup aromas, alongside a crisp and invigorating palate, strongly resemble the 2016 vintage, while its velvety and abundant chalky tannins evoke the essence of 2009. The delicate, pale purple petals that pervade its entirety are utterly exquisite, ensuring that with each breath, one can sense its innate elegance.

The 2022 Fonroque is a dense, structured wine that will require some patience (largely due to the musculature imparted by old, virused vines growing on the limestone plateau), but it shows terrific potential. Offering up notes of mulberries, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit underpinned by a muscular chassis of tannin. It's built for the cellar.

Located on a sandier section of the appellation and you can trace it in the alcohol and the slightly baked fruit, but this remains a successful wine, with raspberry and bilberry fruits, fully ripe but balanced by freshly cut herbs and soft tannic hold. No need to wait too long. 45hl/h yield, Guillard family owners, Alain Moueix director. 34% new barrels. Certified organic and biodynamic.

Juicy black cherries, blackberries, roasted herbs, graphite, and loamy earth notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Fonroque, a rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated 2022 from this team. A blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, it has the plush, sexy style of the vintage and will keep for 15 years or more in cold cellars. It might be the finest wine I've tasted from this château.

Maintenant - 2044 95/100

The 2022 Fonroque has a well-defined bouquet with black cherry, violet and iris flower scents. It's precise with neatly integrated oak. The palate is well balanced with a succulent opening featuring red cherry, wild strawberry, marmalade and allspice. This is quite fleshy toward the finish but with adequate backbone. Maybe I underestimated this en primeur and my score reflects that.

A deep and mineral nose with subtle botanicals and white-pepper accents over the ripe but vibrant berry fruit. Juicy and medium- to full-bodied on the palate, this has chalky tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Impressive freshness and texture from this hot and dry vintage. A big step up from the past. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2026.

The 2022 Fonroque is plush, sensual and quite deep. Silky tannins enshroud a core of dark cherry/plum fruit, new leather, spice, menthol and espresso. This juicy, open-knit Saint-Émilion from Alan Mouiex is a winner.

This is reserved in feel, but with good juicy energy underneath the plush blackberry and boysenberry compote flavors. Iris, ink and sweet tobacco notes chime through, with a flicker of black tea. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2038. —J.M.

The 2022 Fonroque wafts from the glass with sweet aromas of blackberries, cherries, licorice and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate with vibrant acids, supple tannins and an intensely mineral finish. Farmed biodynamically for two decades under the direction of Alain Mouiex, this 17-hectare estate on the western extreme of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau has gone from strength to strength in recent vintages.

Juicy and bright, tangy, a lovely cleanness to this, with bite and tang, on the fresher, more linear, straight, vibrant side, crisp with bite and purity. Tannins are well integrated though give a mineral, slate, graphite, liquorice and flint grip which is quite nice but just overtakes some of the fruit. Nice frame, weight and detail, maybe lacking a touch more density and push, but well worked with nice potential. So juicy and alive, You can feel the energy here, so bright, so defined, so full of life! Biodynamic. Sweet touches. Delicious!!

The 2022 Fonroque offers baked cherries and cassis on the nose, a little too ripe. Very intense and missing a little delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet and candied blueberry and black fruit opening. There's decent length, but it doesn't fully engage as much as others. I've admired what Alain Moueix has achieved at this property, but I wonder if there is just a soupçon of over-ripeness here?

Earthy raspberry notes, a little less concentrated than some in the appellation this year, although this is still very much a muscualr wine for the property, with edges of smoked rosemary herbs. Careful extraction, marked a little bit by heat so the fruit feels a touch baked, but there is juice and freshness here, and it is enjoyable and supple. Guillard family new owners for the last few years, with Alain Moueix still heading things up at this lovely biodynamic property. 34% new barrels.

The 2022 Fonroque is deep garnet-purple in color. It flies out with energetic notes of kirsch, black raspberries, and juicy plums, followed by hints of red roses and fragrant soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is vibrant and refreshing, with plush tannins and a perfumed finish.

The second vintage made in the new cellar, the 2022 Château Fonroque checks in as 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It's a richer, medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated Saint-Emilion offering plenty of plum and darker cherry fruit, a deep, layered mid-palate, ripe tannins, and complex notes of chocolate, violets, acacia flowers, and spice. Tasted twice with consistent notes. 91-93+

Flowers, and spice grab your attention before you find the fresh, finesse styled, crisp red berries on the palate, with their purity, vibrancy and softness in their texture. The only drawback here is its lack of length. Perhaps with a bit of aging, the wine will gain more on the backend. Drink from 2025-2037.
