The luxury cuvee, the 2013 Le Plus de la Fleur de Bouard, is a limited production from what is considered to be the best parcel in the vineyard. This 100% Merlot reveals unreal concentration as well as an opaque blue/purple color, and abundant notes of blueberry liqueur, lead pencil shavings, violets, black currants and black cherries. Deep, opulent and voluptuously textured, this is a candidate for the wine of the vintage. It should drink well for 10-15 years, perhaps longer. It may be hard for readers to believe these two Lalande de Pomerols are better than many first-growths, but they are.

Inky ruby. Lush, sexy bouquet of dark berries, roasted plum, dark chocolate and oak. Then weighty and verging on thick in the mouth, with creamy blackberry and cherry compote flavors complicated by vanilla and clove on the back. Tannins build slowly but surely and coat the palate. Fans of larger-styled Bordeaux will love this. Much sweeter than La Fleur de Bouard.

A further example of Hubert de Boüard’s skill at handling off vintages, this varietal Merlot is delicate and attractive, with appealing restraint and acidity, smooth tannins and plenty of perfume. Not a blockbuster, but very well balanced.

The aromatics on the Le Plus de Bouard has a little more heft than the regular bottling and given time it coalesces nicely and offer quite an opulent glossy bouquet of black cherries and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp definition, a fine line of acidity and a slightly abrupt, punchy boysenberry finish. Fine.

Dichtes Granat. Rauchiges Bouquet, Cassisstauden, Alpenheidelbeeren, Szechuanpfeffernoten. Im Gaumen mit einer tollen Aromatik aufwartend, viel blaue Beeren und eine deutlichen Anzeige von alten Merlotstöcken durch die Terroirreferenz, hat noch viele Muskeln und braucht wohl viel länger bis zur Reife als andere Lalande-de- Pomerols. Aber das wird ja von ihm auch erwartet.

Notes of cassis and cherry preserves are silky and refined, with nice minerality lining the finish. This has a perfumy edge throughout, with a flicker of savory at the very end. —J.M.
