As usual, this young Batard-Montrachet has a bashful, introverted nose with hints of smoke, granite and wild heathland. Ditto the palate: a timid creature but belying the concentration that only becomes apparent with time in the glass. Hints of quince and citrus lemon leading towards tinned apricot and Clementine towards the finish. Great depth and length on the finish with a delicate kiss of white peach hovering for 30 seconds after the wine has been exited stage right. Give it 4- to 5-years. Drink 2012-2020. Tasted February 2008.

An exotic white, showing apricot, vanilla cream and a hint of coconut on a heavy-weight frame. This is unevolved and impressive, with a lot of spice on the finish. The lasting impression is sweet fruit, so be patient. Best from 2010 through 2028

Big and bold and extremely honeyed – massive in fact. Some oak still in evidence but still racy underneath. Absolutely pure and bursting with energy. Very, very rich yet racy too. Still a fair amount of baby astringency underneath – set for greatness! Wonderful lime syrpup sort of enegery – very very long and very sunny somehow, without the puppy fat that can plague some Bâtards. Jancis Robinson
