A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc matured in 50% new oak barrels, the 2021 Les Cruzelles shows a dark, wild bouquet with aromas of cherries, iris, dark wild berries and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly juicy and fleshy, it’s seamless and fresh with a layered texture and powdery tannins. This well-made, forward, balanced beauty will drink well right out of the gate.

This is a very much more expressive wine than both Saintayme and La Chenade, and it builds flavour and power via intense blueberry and mulberry tones, perfumed oak and exotic, floral notes. There is a stunning Cabernet Franc effort here – perfumed, fleshy and intensely floral and, in common with some of the important Cab Franc contributions on both sides of the Gironde in 2021, this grape has performed its duties extremely well here. 17

The 2021 Château Les Cruzelles comes from a single parcel and is 65% Merlot and 35% Merlot. The parcel is more gravelly clay soils, and the high Cabernet Franc component in the wine gives it a style all its own. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as beautiful cassis fruits and notes of chalky mineral, graphite, and violets, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness and has good acidity, fine tannins, and outstanding length. It's another beautiful wine I'd happily drink any time over the coming 10-12 years. The élevage here is 50% new barrels, and it's not showing a hint of oak.

To show such delicate violet aromas with its en primeur, is proof of its refined techniques and ambitions. Ripe and concentrated, the body contains pleinty of energy, with a hint of saltiness behind the lush tannins. When tasting this wine, an image of “salty black chocolate” popped into my mind. Medium-bodied, fresh, sweet, ripe, vibrant plums with a dash of chocolate mint on the nose and on the bright, crisp, soft-textured, chalky palate. The wine is a blend of 65% Merlot with 35% Cabernet Franc. The high portion of Cab Franc really works with the 2021 vintage. 13.5% ABV. Picking took place September 23-September 30. This vintage, Noëmie Durantou decided that one lot of Cabernet Franc was so good that she took it out of La Chenade and blended it into the 2021 Les Cruzelles. It has a lovely nose with blackberry, redcurrant, undergrowth and hints of bell pepper, that Cabernet lending more complexity. The palate is very well balanced with good depth and freshness, spicier than usual with a persistent finish. This would be my pick for Durantou if their Pomerol wines are out of reach.

The 2021 Les Cruzelles is gorgeous. A high amount of Cabernet Franc in the blend lends notable aromatic presence and complexity. All the elements are so well balanced. Naturally, the 2021 doesn't have the body of some recent years, but this style is so appealing. Rose petal, sage, mint, sweet spice and crushed raspberry fruit all grace this wonderfully nuanced wine. The 2021 is a bit shy. All it needs is time to emerge.

Très beau nez de fleurs, d'iris, de violette, de lys et une pointe de fleurs de printemps. Très bel éclat de fruits noirs.Bouche juteuse et droite, une trame tannique élégante et légèrement marquée par le bois avec une très belle allonge aérienne. Les cabernets sont très beaux dans ce cru. 91-93+

The 2021 Les Cruzelles is showing considerable promise, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, sweet spices, wild berries and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, layered and impressively deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a saline finish, it's a terrific effort and as usual a benchmark for what is possible in Lalande-de-Pomerol. The 2021 is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc.
