D'un impressionnant pourpre-noir, le Trolong-Mondot 1995 est fermé, avec un nez serré, mais axtrêmement prometteur, aux irrésistibles arômes de minéral, de vanille, de café, de cerise noire et de groseille. Moyennement corsé, doté de tannins plutôt abondants, mais doux, il déploie une finale longue de 30 à 35 secondes. L'ensemble est ferme, mais impressionnant et prometteur.

Closed but immensely promising, this dark purple-colored wine exhibits a reticent but intriguing nose of underbrush, jammy black fruits, minerals, and vanillin. Deep, rich, and medium to full-bodied, with outstanding extract and purity, the wine possesses a seamless personality with sweeter, more integrated tannin than in the 1996. This is a vin de garde to cellar for another 7-8 years. It is not far off the splendid level of quality achieved in both 1989 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. I am a huge fan of this property run by Christine Valette, and have been an avid purchaser of many of her wines, particularly the 1988, 1989, and 1990. I tasted all three of these vintages in a mini-vertical in January, 1998, and they were sensationally good.

Clever winemaking. Modern and international in style. Not quite as exciting as I remember, but still outstanding. Inky-colored, with loads of vanilla, spice and meatlike aromas. Full-bodied and concentrated, with masses of berry, dark chocolate and vanilla flavors. Slightly astringent on the finish. Best after 2001.

In my opinion, this brilliantly run property should have been elevated in the recent reclassification of St.-Emilion. This is the finest Troplong-Mondot since the trilogy of superb wines produced in 1988, 1989, and 1990. The opaque black/purple-colored, backward 1995 reveals huge extraction of fruit, medium body, low acidity, and outstanding ripeness. Ferociously tannic, it is clearly built to be a substantial vin de garde. Most of the wine's appeal currently comes from its purity, weight, and length as it is not yet enjoyable to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

It will be difficult to pick a favorite between Troplong-Mondot's exquisite 1994 and 1995 St.-Emilions. Although the 1995 reveals plenty of tannin, its extremely low acidity gives the impression of more opulence and extraction of flavor, although I do not think that is the case. It possesses an opaque purple color, fabulous purity and extraction, medium to full body, and a lush, heady, long finish that lasts for nearly a minute. Proprietor Christine Valette is one of the most conscientious Bordeaux producers, and her efforts to upgrade the quality of Troplong-Mondot should result in this estate's promotion to premier grand cru classe when the new 1995 classification of the wines of St.-Emilion is released in several months. My sources claim she will not get it, but she certainly deserves it.
