As I predicted from barrel, this stunning effort is a wine to buy by the case. Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, barbecue smoke, blackberries and black currants. The full-bodied, textured 2008 Saint-Pierre reveals a skyscraper-like mouthfeel along with tremendous viscosity and unctuosity. One of the richest and potentially longest-lived 2008s, it is a fabulous sleeper of the vintage. Drink it over the next 20+ years. Drink 2011-2031

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Randaufhellung. In der Nase süße Holzwürze, einladendes rotes Beerenkonfit, zarte Vanille, Lebkuchen. Am Gaumen elegant, feine Extraktsüße, etwas weitmaschig in der Mitte, präsente Tannine, mittlere Länge, Erdbeerkonfit im Nachhall.

(an 83/17 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, from 45-year-old vines; 50% new oak; 38 hl/ha) Deep, bright ruby-red. Dense, youthfully closed nose of cassis, spicy violet and graphite is quite Pauillac-like-as opposed to Gloria's (from the same owner) more typical Saint-Julien aromas. Chewy, brooding and deep, with concentrated cassis, menthol and mineral flavors framed by a powerful spine of acids and tannins. This will need time. Another potentially outstanding wine for technical director Remi di Costanzo, who spent 12 years with Bruno Prats at Cos d'Estournel before coming to Saint-Pierre. As Saint-Pierre is somewhat underrated by most critics, it can be a very good buy.

It is a shame this wine is so difficult to find, but it is one of the smaller estates in St.-Julien, and Saint-Pierre has a very strong following in Belgium as well as other European countries. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2008 exhibits sweet notes of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, incense, and damp forest floor. With plenty of sweet, ripe tannin in addition to a textured, full-bodied mouthfeel, this blockbuster will require some patience. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030.

Saint-Pierre est en pleine forme. Et 2008 confirme avec un vin dominé par le cabernet-sauvignon (83%) issu d'une maturation lente et d'une sélection sévère. Le vin est coloré, presque noir et révèle un caractère de tanins racés et une grande longueur mêlant minéralité et notes toastées. Un vin à sélectionner pour vos achats primeurs.

Mid healthy crimson. Looks very exciting! Sweet and light on the nose. Unctuous, great texture and very seductive but perhaps not the most typical St-Julien. Just a little awkward with the sweetness and acidity not married - yet. A certain inkiness. Drink 2015-22

A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot, tasted twice with one bottle showing a little greenness – the other much less so. Similarly the sample at the UGC was disjointed compared to the one poured at a negoçiant, which had grippy tannins, clean crisp blackberry on the palate with an earthy, slightly aggressive finish that should mellow by bottling. Tasted April 2009.
