The 2013 Château Quintus is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It has a fragrant bouquet, the Merlot expressive and offering crushed strawberry and cranberry aromas, just a touch of licorice in the background. While it is not an intense Saint Emilion, it is well defined and conveys a sense of charm. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening, slightly chalky tannin, knitted together by a keen thread of acidity and an attractive, vibrant finish. This is a pleasurable, fresh and lively Saint Emilion to enjoy over the next 4-6 years.

Very refined and silky with currants, cedar and chocolate. Perfumed and refined. Tangy acidity. Hints of bark, tobacco and earth. Savory finish. Drink now.

The grand vin, the 2013 Quintus, which is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, has a dark ruby/plum color and an attractive nose of licorice, Christmas fruitcake, tobacco leaf and red and black currants. It is well-made, somewhat compact and narrowly constructed, but pleasant and best drunk during its first 7-8 years.

This property was purchased by the owners of Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion, along with their acquisition of nearby L’Arrosee. The estate used to be called Tertre Daugay, but now has been renamed Quintus.

(80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc):  Medium red.  Vinous aromas of floral red cherry, redcurrant and tobacco.  The red cherry and berry flavors possess enough flesh and fat to buffer the wine's structure, but this wine is nonetheless tight as nails today owing to its impression of high acidity. Finishes juicy and persistent, with no easy sweetness.  About 15% of  L'Arrosée (the latest acquisition by Domaines Clarence Dillon, owners of Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion) went into Quintus (and another 15% into Le Dragon de Quintus, the second wine).

(80 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc) A plush nose, with stunning density, is followed but a controlled delivery of power and fruit. Nothing is forced or urgent. The whole package is long, smooth and even and there is a gradual crescendo of flavour throughout. Very careful use of oak, too. I even prefer this to the 2012 because it is so honed and elegant.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Swish smoky oak on the nose, bright fruit and convincing structure – firm tannins, medium body and persistent length. This has sufficient body, which is so often missing from 2013. Modern, ripe, satisfying.

Now a composite of (formerly) Tertre Daugay and l'Arrosée - but only 15% of the  latter used in the blend. Classic, discreet. Polished texture and fine tannins.  Plays to the fruit

Nez net, ensemble assez riche, mais moins équilibré que les pessac-léognan des vignobles Dillon. On aurait souhaité un peu plus de chair au départ. Tannin ferme, mais racé.

Now part of the Domaine Clarence Dillon portfolio (Haut-Brion, La Mission inter alia) the Quintus now included the vineyard of Château l'Arrosée since its acquisition in October 2013. That means they have a considerable 28-hectares of prime Right Bank "dirt". The nose definitely possesses more fruit concentration than the second wine offering vanilla-infused red and black fruit that is quite glossy and generous. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant, slightly chewy entry, a fine bead of acidity with a slightly pinched by focused finish. Tasted twice with consistent notes, this is a fine Quintus, although there will surely be greater wines in more benevolent vintages.

Ripe and pure, with a lovely feel to the plum, red currant and cherry fruit. The finish is long and harmonious already, featuring lingering chalk and bergamot notes. Features a pleasant tug of terroir at the very end. This looks to be the best vintage yet for this wine. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

This boasts dark tannins, complex acidity and black currant fruits. It’s perfumed, with a fine structure and delicate smoky wood flavors.
