Château Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2011

L'une des caractéristiques de l'année 2011 aura été l'extrême sècheresse constatée au printemps. Si nous additionnons les hauteurs de précipitation des mois d'avril, mai et juin, nous sommes en présence du printemps le plus sec jamais enregistré depuis 1949. Heureusement, nous avons retrouvé, durant l'été, un peu d'eau, permettant à la plante de continuer son travail. Les vendanges auront été sereines, avec un mois de septembre plutôt sec.

Its bigger sibling, the 2011 Quintus is a richer, broader, deeper wine displaying a similar character. Raspberry, cherry, lead pencil and mineral notes dominate this deep ruby/purple-colored 2011. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin and up-front appeal, it should drink well for a decade.

There are high expectations for this new project of the Domaines Clarence Dillon (formerly known as Tertre Daugay). It will be interesting to follow the evolution of these wines given the brilliance of the winemaking team at La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion.

Lovely berry and plum character with sweet tobacco, chocolate and leather. Full body and lightly chewy with just the right tension between tannins and fruit. Pretty finish with just a touch of wood at the end. Better in 2016.

(a 50/50 blend of merlot and cabernet franc): Inky-purple. Spicy, chocolatey aromas of cassis and plum. Enters chocolatey and sweet, then turns more austere and unyielding, though with bright flavors of blackberry and dark cherry throughout. The mounting tannins leave the palate a bit astringent, but the finish is long and juicy. This property, previously known as Chateau Tertre-Daugay, was bought by Haut-Brion's owners in late June of 2011.

An equal part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it boasts a deep blue/purple color along with copious raspberry, spring flower and herb characteristics intermixed with hints of gun flint and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, surprisingly complex and silky smooth, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years. Formerly known as Tertre Daugay, this property was purchased by the Dillon family who also owns Chateau Haut-Brion and Chateau La Mission-Haut-Brion. The impressive 2011 is the first vintage the Dillons have controlled completely.

This blend of 50.5% Merlot and 49.5% Cabernet Franc will be aged in between 40% and 50% new oak and reached 13.9% alcohol. Licorice, earth, spice, floral and jammy black cherry are present in this soft, fresh, medium-bodied wine that ends with fresh red berries and minerality. 90-91 Pts

A blend of 50.5% Merlot and 49.5% Cabernet Franc (although the latter represents one-third of the plantings.) There are only about 17,000 bottles of the Grand Vin. It displays fine intensity on the nose with ripe black cherries, cassis and a touch of dark plum, the Cabernet Franc taking time to emerge from under the aromatic carapace of the Merlot. The palate has a sweet opening with saturated tannins, crisp acidity, the Merlot again quite powerful and sinewy with a long sweet tail on the finish that is just slightly attenuated. I would like to see more expression of the Cabernet Franc, although perhaps that might come with time. Tasted April 2012

Formerly Tertre Daugay, thus creating the fifth grand vin for Domaine Clarence Dillon, hence Quintus. 15 ha planted, of which two-thirds Merlot (started picking 12 September) and one-third Cabernet Franc (finished picking end September). This vintage is a 50/50 blend and only 28% went into Quintus, 28% in Dragon and the rest declassified. Deep black cherry crimson. Dark, rich and spicy. Very fresh, more marked acidity than the Dragon. Silky tannins. Not as much fruit as the Dragon, it seems. Longer though. Tight and lively and not at all dry. Good length too. The Dragon is biting at its heels. (JH) 13.9%

This wine is ripe and juicy, with full, soft tannins, jammy fruit and sweet plum flavors. It shows the acidity of the year with final notes of tobacco and smoke. —R.V
