Wine Advocate

The 1989 should turn out to be the finest Pontet-Canet since the heroic 1961. The wine exhibits an impressive deep ruby/purple color, a highly scented nose of exceptionally ripe cassis fruit and licorice, full body, an excellent mid-palate, and a rich, intense, relatively tannic finish. Presently, the wine has dropped some weight, and appears significantly more austere and tannic. Among the precocious-tasting 1989s, this wine is among the least flattering. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015. Tasted six times. Inconsistent notes.
