Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property and then in Bordeaux a year later. The 2010 Figeac was a "problem child" in its youth, very variable and difficult to pin down, vexing on occasion. Now with a couple of years in bottle, it is really beginning to show what it can do and it far surpassed my expectations. Certainly, it is more withdrawn on the nose compared to the more generous 2009 Figeac. The aromatics are holding everything back. Then, with continued aeration it reveals a subtle marine influence—seaweed and sea spray scents, estuary mudflats. The palate is medium-bodied with moderate depth, but what really distinguishes this wine are the fineness of the tannin, the symmetry of the structure and freshness on the finish, facets hitherto kept secret. As such, it surpasses the 2009, the weightless but intense finish beckoning you to take another sip. The aromatics need to up their game and match what's evolving on the palate—if they do, this will be a very serious Figeac. Tasted July 2016.

Contrairement à la plupart des autres Saint-Emilion, les vignes de Figeac sont plantées sur les sols de graves du plateau partagé avec Cheval Blanc. Son encépagement se constitue pour les deux tiers de Cabernet Sauvignon et de Cabernet Franc. Cela n'a rien d'une lubie des propriétaires, comme le démontrent les anciens grands millésimes tels que 1947, 1966 ou 1982 (dont un verre se trouve sur notre table de travail : fraicheur bourguignonne, structure délicate, tanin intégré et pas un cheveux gris). Mais le 2010 va tous les dépasser ! Fermé, erratique, majestueux, dense, avec un tanin présent, juteux, long, mais sans lourdeur, inconfortable et avec son caractère bien à lui, merveilleusement long : une fois de plus un vin absolument exceptionnel et sans doute le meilleur cru de la Rive Droite dans ce millésime. 2025 à 2050.

As it was il 2009, this is one of the top reds on the Right Bank. I only hope the price is a little more sensible, after last year's miscalculation. The Cabernet Sauvignon at the core of the wine is what makes it so special, giving it rigour and structure for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc to adorn. On second tasting, the wine was even better : fine, grassy, yet concentrated. 20+ years.

Extatique ! I l bouscule le palmarès, venant se placer au plus haut avec un grain d'une élégance rare. L'équilibre est captivant, juste suspendu entre la minéralité, la fraîcheur, la tendre chaleur et la trame soyeuse. La recette est simple : ne pas chercher les surmaturités ni les extractions pour ressortir le floral et la finesse.

Figeac a vécu son premier millésime sans le respecté Thierry Manoncourt, décédé en août 2010. Son gendre Eric d'Aramont précise toutefois : "j'étais depuis 1998 l'un des principaux décisionnaires, avec ma femme Laure, des choix stratégiques d'élaboration de Figeac". En 2010, le cabernet franc a "tramé" le vin, apportant de la fraîcheur et un profil épicé dominant, sans apparaître aussi massif qu'en 2009. Cependant, il faut noter la richesse en alcool avec un 13,8°, un record pour Figeac ! Les cabernets qui représentent 60% de l'assemblage final, atténuent cet excès et maintiennent l'agrément du style maison.

La disparition en 2010 de l'emblématique Thierry Manoncourt n'a en rien amoindri les qualités de Figeac. Ce millésime 2011 se montre équilibré par la présence à part égale de trois cépages (cabernet franc, cabernet-sauvignon et merlot). Le vin est ouvert en attaque, crémeux, avec une pointe d'austérité qui devrait se tendre encore par l'élevage. La finale, très cabernet, reste dans l'esprit épicé du millésime 2010, avec une belle fraicheur.

Quelle race ! Le Figeac le plus complet et le plus charmeur jamais dégusté. Superbe moelleux et équilibre souverain. Le vin s'étire longuement sans faiblir en intensité aromatique.

Very dark purplish crimson still. Remarkably voluptuous nose - almost Napa Valley ! But there is lovely freshness and rigour - and cleanliness - on the palate. Really brisk and Cabernet but with no suggestion of austerity. Should be a very fine Figeac.

Out of the 8 different vintages of Figeac tasted, this is by far the most dense and concentrated but not lacking in finesse. Flavour profile of dark berries and black tea leaves has wonderful precision, freshness and depth. Extremely long length. A strctured, intense Figeac to leave in your cellar and forget about for a few decades.

Certainement le plus complet et racé, c'est le millésime le plus taillé pour la garde. Il y a du corps, de la chair, de la profondeur, de l'acidité (mais de la bonne) plus que de la fraîcheur. Bright ruby-red.  Cassis, blueberry, flowers and clove on the precise, vibrant nose.  Then tight and imploded on the palate, with an almost minty, peppery austerity to the black and blue fruit flavors; hardly your typical 2010!  This very pure, spicy Saint-Emilion has the structure of a cabernet, and its youthfully forbidding tannins call for at least eight years of patience.  It will merit an even higher score if it blossoms in the bottle. 91(+?) points

This Cabernet Sauvignon dominated wine always stands out as a powerhouse of impressive tannins. In 2010, it is complex with a dense structure, tight mineral texture and dense wood.
Underneath, the ripe black fruit bring the promise for the long-term future. Give this wine at least 10 years.

This is very tight, showing a prominent roasted apple wood and bittersweet cocoa frame more today, though the core of dense currant paste, blackberry pâte de fruit and plum sauce waits in reserve. Gorgeous singed spice, anise and toasted fig bread notes flitter through the finish, though this needs some time in the cellar to resolve itself fully. A very distinctive, structured expression of St.-Emilion. Best from 2016 through 2035. –JM

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. I really wanted to be smitten by Figeac, one of Saint Emilion’s greatest estates. But as much as I try to muster excitement on the nose, it just lacks the same joyfulness and intensity as its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with dark chocolate and hints of mocha infusing the red berry fruit. It feels a little as if the oak has been lacquered on to compensate for any deficiencies in the fruit. It is not a bad Saint Emilion...but not a great Figeac. Tasted November 2012 (88 ?)

This is phenomenal on the nose with blackberries, fresh cep mushrooms, forest fruit, and earth. Turns to hazelnuts and dark berries. Subtle. Breathtaking. It's full-bodied on the palate, with superb tannins that last for minutes. The flavor is subtle yet incredible. Love the texture. It is the same wonderful quality level as 2009. This is so fabulous to taste now, but so much better in 2018

The Figeac ’10 has a tightly coiled nose with good definition: dark berried fruit, earthy, sandalwood and smoke, though it would benefit from more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins on the entry, good grip but is missing some fruité in the mid-palate with a dry, slightly astringent finish. Not the fireworks of the 2009s but then again, Figeac always is a problem child in its youth. Tasted April 2011.

The 2010 Figeac gives up notes of tomato leaf, cassis, and herbs, and wonderful spices and very detailed flavours on the mid palate and finish, yielding a supple, soft wine with plenty of depth and finesse. This is a typically classy and well-made Figeac that isn't big or powerful, yet offers wonderful terroir expression and will clearly age for decades.

Exotic fig, boysenberry and blueberry preserves are married to polished tobacco and spice notes in this dense red, which has lots in reserve but is very sleek through the finish for now. It feels as if this will fill out considerably with more élevage. —J.M.

Very dark crimson. Medium concentration. High-toned minerality on the nose. Lots of appetising sap and savour. Loose and round and easy peasy. Attractive in that it’s not overdone; possibly a chance missed in that it’s just slightly slack. Or possibly it’s Figeac..! Ah. That last phrase was written when I tasted this blind and it's true that this potentially great wine rarely shows well en primeur. Hence the hopeful double plus after the score. Though its gravel soils will not have done the wine any favours in this exceptionally dry vintage. Drink 2016-2026 (16,5++ points)
