Bright red.  Blackberry and strawberry on the nose.  Strong acidity gives this wine a slightly tart quality but there's also good clarity and floral lift to the red fruit flavors.  Closes on a vanilla note, with good length and soft tannins.  No green or harsh elements here at all but ultimately this is a very simple La Chapelle.

The 2011 La Chapelle de La Mission reveals abundant quantities of round, generous, black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with hints of gravel and earth, sweet tannin, decent but unobtrusive acidity, and a nicely textured, lush mouthfeel. It is perfect for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years.

Jean-Philippe Delmas continues to quietly and authoritatively turn out one great wine after another at La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion.

This is very, very pretty, with plum, chocolate and cedar, plus hints of sweet tobacco. Full, very soft tannins. Savory and juicy. Delicious already, and hard not to drink it, but better in 2017.

Offers a tarry feel and good drive, with kirsch, blackberry and bramble notes entwined at the core. The lingering tobacco edge hangs on the rugged finish. Should open up sooner rather than later. Drink now through 2021.

(69% merlot, 19% cabernet sauvignon and 12% cabernet franc; 3.63 pH): Ruby-red. Slightly austere aromas of red berries, blackcurrant and flowers. Linear and fresh, with straightforward flavors of small dark fruits and tobacco. Well made but noticeably less fleshy than 2009 and 2010.

Floral summer fruits, clarity and purity. Quite vigourous, it needs time to soften. Drink 2016-2025.

The second wine is also a great success, revealing much of the character of its bigger brother, although not the weight or richness. The open-knit, plush, opulent, fresh, lively 2011 La Chapelle de la Mission is ideal for drinking in its first 10-15 years of life. I can-t say enough good things about the job Jean-Philippe Delmas has done after taking over for his well-known father at La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion. As long-time readers know, I am an addict for both of these wines.

The La Chapelle de la Mission is a blend of 68.7% Merlot, 11.7% Cabernet Franc and 19.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, representing 47% of the crop. It has a light talcum nose, the Merlot expressive as one would expect given the blend, nicely defined but a little pinched. The palate is medium-bodied with angular tannins on the entry. It is a little disjointed at the moment, but there is a decent weight of earthy fruit and a terse citric finish. Fine. Tasted April 2012

Drink 2018-2026
68.7% Merlot, 11.7% Cabernet Franc, 19.6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, bright glowing crimson. Fragrant cherry fruit. White pepper and a touch dusty. Generous cherry fruit and marked freshness. Tender, melted tannins. Lovely scent on the mid palate and fragrant lingering fresh finish. Great freshness and the is there fruit to balance. (JH) 13.7%

Tight, with hints of mesquite and tar, showing good racy tobacco leaf and cassis notes. Tasted non-blind.—J.M.

While certainly powered by tannins, this wine does have a rich, fruity character as well. The finish brings juicy flavors that cut right through the tannins. —R.V.
