His second wine, the 2012 Carillon de L’Angélus, has turned out well for proprietor Hubert de Boüard. Dense ruby purple, it is soft and round, with deep fruit, light tannin and a nicely textured mouthfeel. This is a serious second wine to drink over the next decade.

A llittle lean for the vintage but pretty plum, mineral and dark chocolate character. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Second wine of Angelus. Drink or hold.

The second wine of Château Angélus is not far behind its grand vin in 2012, although it’s different in style. This wine got all the Cabernet Sauvignon and it gives the blend a nervier, fresher undertone. Silky, aromatic and refreshing, this has some firmness on the finish, but is a less extracted wine than Angélus. Drink: 2018-28

Nez frutis rouges, bouche tendue, assez fraîche, bonne matière, généreuse, tanins accrocheurs en finale, joli fruit. Hubert de Boüard : "On veut faire monter cette marque. On commence à produire un peu plus de Carillon, car on a déclassé certaines vignes. On fait 17% de grand vin en moins et 7% de moins en général." Cela se traduit par la production d'un troisième vin, baptisé Numéro 3. O= 2016 G= 8 ans

The second label from Angelus has a very pleasing bouquet – fine delineation and focus with pure dark cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with good tension and freshness on the entry. It does fall away a little rapidly so hopefully it will develop more body and weight during the élevage. We will see. Tasted April 2013.

Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez fruité, de type mûre et suave. Vin délicieux qui fond dans la bouche, évolue savoureux et finement aromatique avec du goût. Beaucoup de plaisir. Assemblage 50 % merlot, 25 % cabernet sauvignon et 25 % cabernet franc.

Drink 2020-2030
Sweet, lightly spiced fresh dark fruit. Smells generous and warm and inviting. Chewy but rounded tannins, rich, savoury with oak but not heavy with char; the fruit can carry the barrels better here. Very primary but in balance. (JH)

The second wine of Angelus, the 2012 Carillon Angelus, is more of a separate estate than a second wine. Composed of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc, with some malolactic in barrel, this wine is deep and richly fruity with lots of jammy black cherries and black currants intermixed with a hint of toasty oak. Lush and opulent, it is ideal for drinking over the next decade. Consumers should find it appealing as well as seductive.
