Bon Pasteur - Pomerol 2022

Since the 2020 vintage, I have noticed that Château Le Bon Pasteur has been heading towards a “gentle” style. This transformation was particularly outstanding in the hot and dry vintage like 2020. The fragrance of creamy strawberries, cherry liquor and soft blueberries is evident from start to finish, with no sense of heaviness. The grandiose structure of the wine gradually emerges towards the end, forming a sharp contrast with the smooth texture on the palate. In recent years, the progress of Château Le Bon Pasteur has been remarkable, and I am looking forward to its completion of the transformation and bringing even more stunning works to everyone.

Brambled black fruits, hedgerow, liquorice, black chocolate, well balanced and keeps its foot off the pedal while still delivering intense favours that deliver estate signature. 70% new oak, integral vinification in barrel. 5.2ha vineyard.

The 2022 Château Le Bon Pasteur is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, offering a round, supple, and beautifully textured profile with red and black fruits, chocolate, tobacco, and hints of minerality. Medium to full-bodied, it has velvety tannins, terrific mid-palate depth, and a pure, layered style. Vinified in stainless steel and aged for 15 months in 70% new French oak, this voluptuous yet balanced Pomerol will evolve well for 20+ years. Total production: 1,500 cases.

The 2022 Le Bon Pasteur has a well-defined, finely delineated bouquet that is surprisingly classic in style, with blackberry, cedar and light pencil shaving notes manifesting in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, gentle and harmonious, with pliant tannins and a persistent, mocha-tinged finish. This is a well-crafted Pomerol that should age well in bottle.

Plenty of plums and chocolate to this young Pomerol with hints of cedar and sandalwood. It’s full-bodied with creamy and chewy tannins and a layered finish. A little old-school. Needs time to soften. Best after 2029.

The 2022 Le Bon Pasteur is terrific. Winemaker Julien Viaud has succeeded in dialing back some of the heavy extractions of years past to achieve a style that is more ideally suited to the qualities of this site on the Pomerol/Saint-Émilion border. Everything about the 2022 speaks to finesse and balance. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, blood orange and mocha are some of the many notes that open with a little coaxing. What a gorgeous wine this is.

Lovely floral aromatics. Tannic and massy, although fully fruity and lively, this has both the structure and concentration of the vintage - with lashings of Pomerol power - with really quite present and upfront tannins as well as a nice juiciness and tangy bitterness to the finish. Despite the clear heft, there is freshness and cool blue fruit touches which stop it from becoming too much. On the riper fuller side, but still with definition to the finish. The structure is at the fore so covers some of the more friendly juicy aspects but it keeps its frame and drive. A yield of 34hl/ha.

The 2022 Le Bon Pasteur has a very ripe, candied, quite floral bouquet that takes time to open in the glass. Touches of Christmas cake infuse the black fruit, opulent and generous. The palate is medium-bodied and shows more composure than the aromatics at the moment. The acidity is well judged and counterbalances the richness on the finish. Quite long and silky smooth, this 2022 continues the success of the more classically-styled 2021.

Deep crimson Fresh cherry, chinotto, panforte aromas, A touch soupy with plentiful juicy red and dark berry fruits, pippy/ chocolaty tannins and well balanced fresh acidity. Concentrated and vigorous palate with a grippy firm finish. (Merlot, Cabernet Franc. About 80% new oak)

Plenty of deep damson and black cherry fruits here, well controlled, followed up by coffee bean and cocoa powder. Pomegrantes and pink grapefruit add juice through the mid palate, but the heat builds, throwing things off course by the finish. 70% new oak.

Rich, sweet nose but with obvious underlying freshness too – a bellwether for the vintage in this usually quite extreme wine? This still exhibits the Michel Rolland concentration but manages some refreshment factor on the end – which fights through the tannin which is a tiny bit drying on the end at this stage. 16,5

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Le Bon Pasteur opens a little broody and closed, with notes of tar, black truffles, and damp soil, before opening out to evocative scents of baked plums and wild blueberries. The full-bodied palate is rich and impressively restrained, with loads of earthy nuances and a velvety textured, beautifully poised finish.

Showing beautifully, the 2022 Château Bon Pasteur offers up a ripe, sexy, medium to full-bodied style as well as classic Pomerol notes of red and black fruits, leafy herbs, chocolate, and spice. It has good mid-palate depth, building, ripe tannins, and the powerful, concentrated style of the vintage. It's going to need 5-7 years of bottle age, but it's a terrific wine in the making that's going to rival the 2018, 2019, and 2020. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that will spend 15 months in 70% new oak.

The 2022 Le Bon Pasteur is another impressive wine in a string of recent releases from the château. Bright, vibrant and beautifully perfumed, Le Bon Pasteur is very nicely done. Crushed red berry fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and cinnamon lend notable brilliance. This mid-weight, juicy Pomerol is a charmer. Moving away from the heavily extracted style of the past is paying off for Le Bon Pasteur. There's still plenty of richness but far more harmonious balance than in some vintages in the not-too-distant past. Tasted three times. Drinking window : 2027-2047

Dark, in color, the wine exudes aromas of flowers, black raspberries, black cherries, chocolate, licorice and espresso. The wine is concentrated, lush, deep, creamy and fresh. The dark pit fruits are perfectly ripe. The tannins are silky. The finish is long, sapid and wide. The fruit really hangs in and you get to experience more of those opulent, chocolate-coated plums on the backend. The wine blends 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 14.5% ABV, 3.7 pH. Drink from 2026-2045.

A very solid LBP with a full body and firm and juicy tannins. A little old school but it’s opulent and rather decadent with a fresh finish at the end. Shows excellent potential.
