The 2021 Blason de L’Évangile is a very pretty wine. It is the first year the Blason was aged partly in concrete and steel, with a mix of 20% concrete, 15% foudre and the rest neutral barrique—an approach that seems very well suited to a wine that is all about elegance and class. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel linger on the delicate finish. The 2021 is lovely.

The 2021 Blason de l'Evangile has actually benefited, in a sense, from the frost, as the estate's lesser, sandier terroirs were hit hardest and represent a smaller proportion of the blend than usual. Bursting with aromas of plums, berries, violets, licorice and mint, it's medium-bodied, fleshy and suave, with powdery tannins and succulent acids. Some 20% was matured in tank and another 20% in foudre, leaving the wine's fruit in the foreground.

Winemaker Juliette Couderc arrived at L’Evangile in September 2020. Not a bad vintage to start at this legendary estate. Little did she know that the next vintage would be one of the most testing of her career. There are few people as passionate and indeed detailed as Juliette. Her recollection of every moment, challenge and qualified success during the 2021 vintage is seared into her memory. As it should be because she made two exceptional wines this year. What a shame that the yields were so low, but when your wines taste this good, your pride in your teammates must be sky-high. Blason is usually made from the sandier plots at Evangile, and so it was in 2021. Wisely, no new oak is employed here, which allows the amazingly refreshing and evocative fruit to shine. Concrete tanks, foudres and 8% amphoras will cradle this beauty until it is ready for bottling. I expect there to be a queue assembled outside the winery on the date that this wine is packed into its cartons because the production is so minuscule, and yet this wine will no doubt be ready to sample, such is the clarity and enthusiasm it already shows in the glass, that if you are not in the line-up you will inevitably miss out. 17

The second wine of the estate, the 2021 Blason De L'Evangile checks in as 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby-hued, it has a juicy, lively, pure Merlot bouquet of ripe cherries and black raspberries, spring flowers, and sappy herbs, with a kiss of graphite and minerality. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has an elegant, supple mouthfeel, light tannins, and a great finish. It's a classy, elegant, juicy Merlot to drink over the coming 10-12 years.

Medium-deep colour. Fresh raspberry black plum blackberry praline. Concentrated black plum blackberry fruits, tobacco leaf with fine, leafy al dente tannins. Finishes chewy firm with very good mineral length and cedar oak. Should develop well. 84% merlot, 16% cabernet franc. 50% foudre/ 25% concrete tank, 8% amphora, 17% seasoned 2-year-old oak.

Spicy, leafy, accents add to the bright red fruits on the nose. Medium-bodied, soft, crisp, strawberry, cherry, and red plums with a savory touch and just a hint of chocolate finish off the wine. You can enjoy this on release and over the near term while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. Drink from 2023-2031. 88-90

The 2021 Blason de L'Évangile has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and briar scents, nicely focused, and not powerful but cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry. Not a complex Deuxième Vin, yet it does convey a sense of drinkability. A touch of spice enlivens the finish. Fine.

The 2021 Blason de L'Évangile is marked by bold, racy fruit and terrific energy. Crushed red berry fruit and lively floral notes abound in a classy, refined Blason. All the elements are impeccably balanced. Pretty floral accents grace the lifted, perfumed finish. The 2021 is a gorgeous Blason.

Exhibiting notions of sweet red berries, plums and rose petals, the 2021 Blason de l'Evangile is medium-bodied, lively and charming, with bright acids and powdery tannins. The estate's holdings near Château Beauregard were frosted, meaning that quantities are rather depleted this year. It's a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc.
