L'Aventure - Estate Reserve - Paso Robles 2023

Sweet and luscious with, amazingly, some freshness. Finish is a bit alcoholic though.

A full-bodied, luscious and generous wine with abundant layers of sweet black fruit flavors, chalky mineral undertones and silky tannins. An estate blend of syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Drink or hold.

The flagship cuvée of the estate, the 2023 Estate Reserve is based on a Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon blend, and it's this type of blend that's the reason Stephan Asseo made his move from Bordeaux to Paso Robles. Based on 50% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot aged 21 months in 85% new French oak, it offers off the chart aromatics of crème de cassis, crushed stone, graphite, violets, and scorched earth on the nose, all framed by perfectly integrated oak. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. There are roughly 2,000 cases, and you could safely put this up with the top handful of vintages of this cuvée ever produced. It needs 4-5 years and will see its 30th birthday in fine form. Drink 2031-2053.

Powerful, dense bouquet with espresso, truffle, black forest fruits, cassis, plums, tobacco, dried rosemary and a touch of dark chocolate in the background. Good density, juicy, with plenty of fine sweet tannin, good structure and fine acidity. Delicate, dense, ripe red-to-black berry fruit with blackberries, mulberries, toasted herbs and a touch of cocoa on the finish. Long.

We reach the summit. A great wine with that signature limestone vertically and minerality. This is more mineral than the others – more terroirdriven in a way. There are brilliant cedar notes. A touch of graphite too and a little lily of the valley with the natural floral freshness than implies. Walnut shell and a hint of new leather. Lanolin. Dark black cherry and damson, a little bramble and loganberry. The Estate Reserve is, as it should be, more ample, cooler at the core and almost more layered with lovely svelte sheets of silken fruit and pixilating tannins. Very balanced, very harmonious, resolutely fresh and with a seamless integration almost like its aged in magnum. The texture and the gentle grip of the tannins are both superimpressive. The best I’ve yet tasted from L’Aventure. 99.

This has got to be one of the best examples of this wine that I have tasted, fragrant, aromatic, chalky in the best way, love the blueberry and black cherry fruit, alongside the freshly cut herbs, drawn out, poised, measured. Harvested right into November. Chloe Asseo director, Stephan Asseo owner and winemaker, from the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles. Name changed to Estate Reserve as of the 2022 vintage, 85% new French oak for ageing.

Intensely spiced, the 2023 Estate Reserve mixes cedar box, pine, incense, dried sage, crushed stone and mentholated blackberries. It is youthfully dense, tightly focused, silken yet almost sultry in character, with mineral-encased red and black fruits that flood the senses, leaving a coating of edgy tannins in their wake. Heroically structured and incredibly long, the 2023 leaves a minty freshness to counterbalance a tart blackberry saturation through the long, tension-filled finale. Bury this unbridled beast in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot and was aged for 21 months in 85% new French oak.

Lastly, the 2023 Estate Reserve is a riveting barrel sample that should rank with the greatest vintages of this cuvée ever produced. Pure cassis, blue fruits, graphite, and crushed stone notes all give way to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated red that has finely polished tannins, just about flawless balance, and a gorgeous finish. The blend is 50% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot. If you get the chance, don't miss it.
