There's so much floral and berry character on the nose and palate here. It's full-bodied and very dense with lots of fine and delicate tannins. Winemaker Olivier Berrouet calls it a classic Bordeaux in style and I have to agree with him because of the fine tannins, fresh acidity, and beautiful reserve fruit. Lovely sweet berry and chocolate finish to the wine. Try in five to six years.

It is hard to call Petrus a “sleeper of the vintage,” but the 2008 will merit more attention than most consumers would think. Low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare resulted in only 25,000 bottles of this beauty. A wine of great intensity (possibly the most concentrated wine of the vintage), this 100% Merlot boasts a dark purple color as well as a sweet perfume of mocha, caramel, black cherries, black currants, earth and forest floor. Deep, unctuously textured, full-bodied and pure, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and should drink well for 25-30+ years. Drink 2015-2045

This has texture and range that's step up from the pack, with a gorgeous, silky feel to the ripe but restrained cherry, raspberry and damson plum notes that are layered with hints of black tea, incense and mineral. The long finish is more about poise than power. Lovely. Drink now through 2020. -J.M

Am Gaumen eher schlanker Körper, rotbeerige Frucht, wirkt insgesamt eher trocken, kraftvolle Tannine, die dem Wein Länge geben, zart nach Bitterschokolade, etwas Tee im Nachhall, hat Reifepotenzial.

Medium-deep ruby. Exotic, perfumed aromas of dark cherry, spicy plum, soy sauce and Oriental spices. Full and voluptuous on the palate, this boasts exceptionally ripe, decadent red cherry flavors lifted by soy sauce and cinnamon nuances. Very long and silky, with unbelievably fine-grained tannins. With its texture of liquid velvet, this should make a memorable Petrus. Le Pin.

Sattes Purpur- Rubin. Delikates Bouquet von Himbeeren, Erdbeeren und Kokos, dahinter helle Schokolade, feine Pfeffernoten, delikates Parfüm. Am Gaumen süss und wiederum rotbeerig, engmaschiges Tanningerüst, erst im Nachklang Reserven für einen weiteren Punkt. Die nächsten 10, 15 Jahre aber ist der Pétrus längst nicht die erste Wahl. Schon gar nicht beidem Preis. 2020 – 2050

The 2008 is destined to be one of the greatest Petrus’s ever made, ranking alongside the 1989, 1990, 1998, and 2000, and even eclipsing the 2005. An inky/red/purple color accompanies an unevolved, but promising nose of sweet red and black fruits intermixed with hints of earth, spice box, and caramel. It possesses a formidable personality of great intensity, awesome texture, amazingly well-integrated sweet tannin, and a freshness and precision that are hallmarks of this vintage. Given the tiny production, there will not be much of this sensational wine. Like most recent Petrus vintages, a decade of patience will be required despite the sweetness of the tannin. It should evolve for at least 50 years.

Olivier Berrouet a pris la succession de son père Jean Claude (qui demeure consultant auprès de la maison moueix) à la tête du domaine. 2008 est un grand vin, d'une puissance maîtrisée et d'une complexité qui forcent le respect. Les rendements sont extrêmement bas, ce que Christian Moueix attribue autant au millésime qu'au vieillissment du vignoble. Le vin possède un nez profond de fruits rouges et d'épices, avec une notes florale délicate. La bouche, tout en charme et en volume, est d'une grande complexité, avec une allonge fabuleuse et une finale qui se termine sur de délicieuses notes fruitées. Un très grand vin et une star du millésime.

This has a very feminine nose that wafts from the glass: certainly more expressive than usual at this stage, pure dark cherries, raspberry, blueberry and violets. The palate is full-bodied, very powerful and generous with layers of dark fruits, awesome definition and focus. This is a Petrus that undoubtedly lives up to the billing. This Pétrus is extraordinarily minerally on the finish with an aftertaste that just will not go away. Tasted April 2009.

Couleur rouge, sombre, intense et belle. Au nez, voici un mélange de ce que je trouve à l'Evangile (le fruit très mûr), à La Conseillante (la violette) et à Vieux Château Certan (la fraîcheur). Nuances suaves. La bouche se présente différemment de d'habitude. Et je ne crois pas que ce soit induit par des échantillons présentés avec un soufre libre plus bas que les années précédentes. En fait, ce vin est plus hédoniste, plus merlot dans son style que cabernet sauvignon (dégusté à l'aveugle, Pétrus se confond souvent avec un vin de la rive gauche). Donc, ce 2008 débute très velouté et se développe aromatique, avec le charme et le volume attendus du merlot sur argile. Très aromatique sous sa chair, il s'achève fondant et long, un peu moins carré et puissant que d'autres années. Pour une fois, il n'est pas "froid" ! Bonne longueur savoureuse, aux tannins fins.

Deep crimson. Not the freshest sample on the nose. Lots of power and wildness – really does taste as though it springs from the earth to heal sore throats everywhere. But it’s a less civilised, less tamed expression than the Trotanoy tasted alongside. Very complex with a dry rather than sweet finish. Extremely complex rather than an easy charmer. Quite burly. A J P Moueix wine. Drink 2018-40 18+

There's no doubting whose king of the Moueix stable this year. This is a big, brooding wine, deep coloured with an impressive density of fruit and imposing structure behind. Typical of the vintage the tannins are powerful, fresh and long. Drink 2018-2040.

There's lots of rose in this wine, with hints of dark chocolate and berries. Full and powerful, with chewy tannins and a long finish. A big, juicy wine. Very impressive for the vintage.
