Domaine de Chevalier rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2004 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056

This vintage comes after 2003 which was marked by a small harvest due to drought and very high summer temperatures. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 In winter, below normal temperatures were recorded as well as a water deficit. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 Budding started in April but the vegetation did not develop due to the rain and cold. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 In the spring, May was relatively hot and rainy. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 The good weather in the second fortnight facilitated the start of flowering for the earliest plots. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 The summer was not very hot, the month of July was characterized by good insulation, light rain but a quite average temperature, except for a few peaks at the end of the month. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 it is the opposite for the month of August, the rains were heavy, the sunshine and the temperature were not very high; 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 the maximum midday amplitude is even relatively low for this time of the year. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 On the other hand, the month of September was pleasant with good sunshine, relatively high temperatures, especially during the day; 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 the cool nights thus prevented the development of rot. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056

Tasted at Bordeaux Index annual 10-year on tasting from an ex-château bottle, the Domaine de Chevalier 2004 has a slightly subdued nose with broody red and black tertiary fruit laced with cedar and smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with furry tannins, moderate acidity and a foursquare, salty finish that is redeemed but a long and tender aftertaste. I suspect this is just going through a dumb phase as it showed has shown much better on previous occasions. Tasted March 2014.

This note was taken at the château and the bottle showed better than the one in London the previous week. The 2004 is very expressive on the nose, showing more vigour than the 2002 with pure blackberry, cedar and gravel aromas. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a nice level of dryness and austerity and good acidity. Very well balanced with a sense of symmetry and precision to it. Cedar and tobacco, a touch of burnt toast towards the very focused finish. This is a great 2004 from Domaine de Chevalier. Excellent. Drink 2014-2020+ Tasted September 2008.

Couleur dense, très belle attaque dans un registre tendu et puissant. Tanins raffinés et expression minérale éclatante en finale.

Thankfully, this estate appears to have scaled down their use of new oak as the wood component is much more subtle than in previous vintages. The classic southern Graves version of elegance, the 2004 Domaine de Chevalier exhibits aromas of lead pencil shavings, sweet cherry and strawberry fruit, cedar, spice, and subtle smoke. Medium-bodied with outstanding purity, richness, and texture, this soft, round beauty is ideal for drinking over the next 15+ years.

Good ruby-red. Expressive aromas of plum, redcurrant, tobacco and gravel. Supple and juicy, with good energy to the flavors of cassis, flowers and tobacco. Very savory wine with subtle sweetness of fruit. Finishes broad and sweet but quite firm, with sneaky length.

Aromas of blackberry and delicate tobacco, with just a hint of toasty oak. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. This is all in finesse and length. Best after 2009. 7,500 cases made.

A strong effort from consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, the 2004 Domaine de Chevalier (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is a classic Graves revealing a deep ruby/purple color, smoky, scorched earth, and graphite-like notes, and copious quantities of black currant and sweet cherry fruit. This heady, medium-bodied, elegant claret possesses the potential to develop into an exceptionally complex wine. It represents pure finesse married with impressive substance and texture. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+.

Aromas of blackberries and cherries follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with good fruit and a medium finish. Delicate and refined. Could be better than 2003. Almost 89-91
