Château Malartic Lagravière - Pessac-Léognan white 2012

A real vintage of winegrowers, with a very rough weather, not leaving room for improvisation! Winter 2012 is dry and quite cold, followed by a cool, rainy spring. Summer is dominated by drought and heat, and fall by moisture. It is a rather late vintage where bloom and veraison are slow and quite heterogeneous. The reasoned management of the vineyard for more than 10 years has made it possible to catch up this delay in maturity: plowing, thin leaf thinning at the end of July, harvesting in green in 3 stages to regulate the heterogeneity. In the end, the harvested grapes are thus perfectly healthy. The whites of Malartic are very successful: aromatic, fat and beautiful tension. The reds show a very fine quality of tannins, with merlots of a great purity of fruit, round and ample, and cabernets racy, silky of a beautiful structure. The precision of the ways in the vineyard and the gentle winemaking work, make it possible to achieve a vintage of beautiful structure, with an elegant structure and a crunchy fruit.

Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc has a very attractive bouquet, armed with expressive Sauvignon Blanc scents: gooseberry, greengage and a touch of honeysuckle. The palate is clean and fresh with a veneer of oak that will be subsumed with time. I appreciate the balance and poise of this wine, that dab of ginger on the finish that leaves the tongue tingling long after the wine has gone. What a fantastic, life-affirming, damn delicious white Bordeaux from the estate - this comes highly recommended. Tasted January 2016.

Light and a little simple on the nose. Lacks a bit of concentration. For the moment it tastes more like a dry white than a Léognan. But it does

gain interest on the finish so perhaps a more interesting future is in store?13.5% Drink 2015-2018 (15,5+ points)

Now, this is a bouquet that really means business – lovely mineral-like scents, cold granite and Alpine streams with crisp green fruit that just soars from the glass. The palate is vibrant on the entry with well-judged acidity, lovely ripe green apples and hints of nectarine and apricot lying in wait in the background with a long satisfying citric finish. This is a great white wine from the Bonnie family – a startling white Bordeaux that reminds you how great it can be. Tasted April 2013.

Fatter, richer and more honeyed than usual, this 2012 is a top-notch success. It exhibits abundant glycerin, a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, plenty of honeyed tropical fruits (pineapples), a striking minerality and a long finish. It should drink well for a decade or more.

Nez pur, sur les fruits blancs, souple, charmeur, peu de complexité mais grande buvabilité, fraîcheur et finesse, glissant.

Pure vibrancy of Sauvignon-dominated fruit with an added richness from the vintage and from perfect winemaking, a very classy wine. 17.5/20pts ( 91/100pts)

Drink 2016-2020
Very pale. Low-temperature fermentation on the nose – a bit dull really. Good substance on the palate. But few distinguishing marks at this stage. Very low key. Though more interest than the average Sancerre...

Bright and pure, with a nice range of pear and yellow apple notes backed by flickers of wet straw and tarragon. Wet stone hint in the background, too. Long. Delicious. —J.M.
