Castle Lespault-Martillac Rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2014

From August 27, 60 days of great weather allowed a turnaround of beneficial situation bringing week after week a complete maturity of our different grape varieties. A great richness of fruit combined with a very good level of acidity (stigma of a rather cool summer), ensured the great success of 2014!

Bright and fresh with moderate tannins and lively red berry fruit, this is a charming wine with enough depth to provide some real interest. Needs two to three years to soften.

The 2014 Lespault-Martillac is a bit burly and rough around the edges, but it offers good depth and consistency throughout. Sweet tobacco, leather, spice, game and dried herbs are all nicely delineated. The 2014 is a bit rustic, but pleasing.

This is a crowd-pleasing, early-drinking wine, light but ripe with the scent of olives and a dark, red berry profile. This wine is produced with the kind of style that will draw a broad audience. 84-86 Pts

The Château Lespault-Martillac 2014 is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the malolactic completed in oak barrels, of which around one-third was new. It has a ripe bouquet with blackberry, dark plum and a hint of cocoa coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly rustic tannin. There is plenty of chunky black fruit here with a pleasing freshness and sense of simplicity on the finish. Not all wines have to be complicated (go to the white version for that).

Delicious, balanced red with spices and dark plum. The wine is well crafted with grainy, generous tannins. Vines are about 35 years old and in this blend 65% is Merlot. Only 7 ha make up this red wine vineyard. Good value at about 20 euros per bottle.

Medium weight, this has soft red fruits, no need to wait for too long to enjoy. Good value, unfussy but with the benefit of the Pessac-Léognan savoury fruit structure and balance. Made by the Olivier Bernard team of Domaine de Chevalier, although owned by Jean-Claude Bolleau. Drink: 2020-2030 (86)

Very soft and fresh with round tannins and juicy fruit. Velvety texture. I like the density and ripeness. 65% merlot and 35% cabernet franc.

Offers a polished, fresh feel, with a rounded core of plum and cherry fruit, backed by pretty spice and a hint of red licorice. Lacks the range of the top examples, but
what's there is fresh and delineated.
