Apposite the 1986 Léoville-Poyferré there is great difference in colour, the 1985 less opaque with much more maturity on the its brick rim. The nose is quintessential for the vintage, ripe and generous, perhaps almost extrovert with notes of blackberries, sandalwood, hung game and chestnut. The palate is medium-bodied, lovely fleshy texture but with firm, very fine tannins behind it. Roasted meats, spice, dates and game all vie for attention, whilst the finish is very harmonious and focused with a long aftertaste. Just a lovely claret to consume now, as I doubt it will get much better. Drink now-2015 [-2015] Tasted March 2008.
