(a 75/25 blend of merlot and cabernet franc):  Bright dark red.  Musky aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, menthol, flowers and spicy oak.  Rather suave and fine-grained, with red fruit, coffee and mocha flavors complicated by sweet oak and underbrushy soil tones.  Finishes with a positive herbal element, good ripe acidity and substantial lush, building tannins.

A supple, polished, modern style, relying on creamy, mocha-tinged toast, gentle plum and blackberry fruit flavors before finishing with a lingering cocoa edge. Should stretch out nicely with modest cellaring. Drink now through 2018. –JM

Always one of the better wines from his surprisingly value-laden appellation, the Joanin-Becot’s 2010 Cotes de Castillon (tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol) has supple, sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit with hints of licorice, underbrush and subtle smoky oak. This round, generous wine, made from 32 hectoliters per hectare, is a final blend of about three-fourths Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. It can be drunk now or cellared for up to 7-8 years.

2010: A potential sleeper of the vintage, this 2010 offers up big, bold, exuberant flavors (red and black fruits, licorice, incense and toasty oak), good concentration, richness and freshness, abundant texture and plenty of depth and length. It may turn out to be longer lived than most vintages because of the crisp acids and ample extract. Drink it over the next decade. Drink 2011-2021

An overly oaky style with extracted flavours that are clumsy and two-dimensional. Too woody with no distinctive flavours and no fruit core. The finish is tannic and astringent.

Très beau volume, fruit intense, texture serrée, son tanin fin, sa grande allonge svelte et musclée. Splendide.

This is a step up, with noticeably dark, toasty fig, spice and blackberry compote notes that are still wrestling with one another. Yet there's plenty of flesh, with the acidity buried on the finish. —J.M.

Serious wine. Deep purple-black hue. Big, rich and powerful. Sophisticated use of oak. Acidity gives balance. Persistent. Drink 2015-2022. (16.5 points)

Quite deep crimson. Full savoury and compost on the nose – lots of damp leaves! Sweet and tea leaves. Lots of interest. Atypical. Slightly pruney note. Interesting wine. Tasted 8 Apr: MLF still ongoing. Very deep crimson. Very sweet and thick and rather heavy. A bit dried out on the end. Rather caricature modern right-bank style. (Score: 15 15-22) Drink 2015-2021
