Pastourelle de Clerc Milon - Pauillac 2018

Pastourelle de Clerc Milon, a second wine that runs the show

The Pastourelle is a traditional dance which evokes a knight's romantic encounter with a shepherdess: the name echoes the pair of dancers that adorn the label of the Grand Vin.

Thus comes on the second wine of Château Clerc Milon, Pastourelle de Clerc Milon, which has made its place since 2009 in the court of the great of Pauillac. The style of Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is perfectly consistent with that of its elder.

The 2018 vintage

The wines are intensely coloured and have excellent tannic structures. They are remarkably dense and smooth, with a rare concentration of aroma and flavour. Yields were smaller because of the drought, but the vintage can already be reckoned one of the great successes.

The 2018 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is a pretty, fruity wine loaded with near and medium-term appeal. Juicy dark cherry, red plum, spice, leather and licorice are front and center. The Merlot-based Pastourelle is released a few years after the vintage, when the winemaking team believes it is ready to drink.

The 2018 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is composed of 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it rapidly unfolds in the glass, revealing notions of tilled soil, fallen leaves, charcoal and sautéed herbs over a core of redcurrant jelly and plum preserves, plus a waft of lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers compelling tension with chewy tannins and loads of savory layers on the finish.

Forward, elegant, soft and already quite approachable, this delicious wine is fully ready to go with all its sweet, fresh, ripe red fruits, tobacco, forest leaf and floral notes. This is perfect for ordering in a restaurant as it does not require decanting.

The 2018 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon has a more open bouquet than it did out of barrel, offering brambly red fruit, undergrowth and light gravelly scents. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly raw tannins on the entry and good acidity. A rather angular Pastourelle that will benefit from a couple of years in bottle to round out its edges. [This will not be released for three or four years, by which time I think it will be more melded together.]

A pretty red with lovely density and intensity, offering lead pencil, blackcurrants and cherries. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Second wine of Clerc Milon. Drink or hold.

This is an enjoyable wine with rich and well-place fruit, succulent tannins and liquorice and woodsmoke adding an appealing twist of sweet approachability. It’s a good stepping stone to Clerc Milon as second wines should be. Harvest took place between 17 September and 10 October.

The 2018 Pastorelle de Clerc Milon has a very tight , backward bouquet that for me was a little overawed by the preceding 2018 d’Armailhac. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine line of acidity, suppler than the 2017, and showing good density on the finish. Perhaps at the moment it is just missing a little personality and does not stick in the memory like its siblings. Let’s see how it shows once in bottle (February/March 2020).

Medium-bodied with a black raspberry, floral edge to the elegant, fresh, soft textured style, you can drink this charmer on release with pleasure.

The 2018 Pastourelle de Clerc Milon is blended of 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. Grapes were harvested a bit later here than at Mouton, from September 17 to October 10. Deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully spicy nose of cloves, star anise and fenugreek with a core of chocolate-covered cherries, plum preserves and black raspberries with touches of mossy bark and cracked pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great freshness with vibrant black fruits and spicy sparks coming throughout the softly textured finish.
