Pavie Macquin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Creating a great wine is one thing; crafting great wine year after year is a far greater challenge. Château Pavie Macquin is a shining example of unwavering excellence, remaining steadfast in its bold character regardless of the obstacles it faces. The 2022 vintage greets the senses with a monumental aromatic profile, evoking the grandeur of an imperial banquet within the glass. Plum, black tea, dried cherries, and blueberry jam lead the aromatic symphony, joined by captivating hints of Sichuan pepper, roasted sunflower seeds, and savory grilled meat. The water-retaining limestone plateau is undoubtedly a divine gift, allowing the wine to achieve a silky, tofu-like texture even in warm, arid years while delivering a finish as firm and tensile as steel wire. This wine’s unique personality is a perfect fusion of untamed wildness and cultivated elegance, offering a distinctive identity that rewards true enthusiasts with every sip.

The 2022 Pavie Macquin has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of dark berries, licorice, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, dense and layered palate that's lively, concentrated and controlled, with excellent integration and length. Youthfully reticent, it will require a bit of patience.

A safe pair of hands in such an extreme vintage, and this is certainly a port in a storm. Lovely textured, rippling with dark black cherries, cherry pit for a savoury touch, sage and rosemary and white pepper spice. Totally gorgeous, one of the wines of the vintage. Corre-Macquin family, 31hl/h yield. 12.8ha, 35 years average age of vines, clay limestone soils on plateau.

Blackcurrants, blue fruits, crushed stone, chocolate, and massive amounts of minerality all emerge from the 2022 Château Pavie Macquin, a more burly, incredibly concentrated Pavie Macquin that has a lively, vibrant mouthfeel, ripe, building, substantial tannins, and a gorgeous finish. Based on the normal 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, it's a riveting, powerful 2022 that's built for the cellar. Hide bottles for a solid decade if you can, and it will have 40 years of overall longevity.

?2028-2052 98/100 ?

The 2022 Pavie Macquin has a fresh, vibrant, well-defined and focused bouquet with perfumed red berry fruit laced with violet and light iodine scents. There is a mineralité here that will come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied and fine with a fresh entry, fluid tannins, a keen line of acidity and a sorbet-fresh finish that urges you back for another sip. This is excellent.

The intensity of raspberries, stones, chalk and sea salt is impressive. White pepper. Medium-bodied with really crunchy fruit yet the firm and creamy tannins are really well curated with a polished texture and superb finish. Long and powerful. Such energy. Try after 2029 but hard not to drink before.

The 2022 Pavie Macquin is stellar, as it was _en primeur_. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, new leather, spice and plum run through this powerful Saint-Émilion. Silky in the glass, it boasts plush, seamless tannins and fine balance. As always, Pavie Macquin is very sexy—one of the most sensual and hedonistic wines of the vintage.

Gorgeously aromatic, this throws off aromas and flavors of violet, plum sauce, açaí berry puree and boysenberry preserves that are carried by the very polished structure. A subtle chalky thread curls through on the finish as the fruit lingers beautifully. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2040. —J.M.

Perfumed and aromatic, smells rich but not too intensely with roses and soft purple flowers. Succulent and really quite crisp and clear, such clarity to the fruit, with both a sharpness of acidity and mineral bite to the tannins. Liquorice, blue fruits, cool chalky tones, You get a sense of the power and structure, it’s wide and full, thick but keeping the freshness and tension with super high acidity giving the mouthwatering nature and a touch of austerity. Precise and detailed with energy and tension as well as depth and clarity. Great potential. A yield of 31hl/ha.

Mastering the art of crafting exceptional wine is no small feat, but maintaining consistent excellence year after year is truly remarkable. Château Pavie Macquin embodies this very principle, retaining its steadfast character throughout time. The aroma of 2022 is grandiose and sweeping, evoking the sensation of an opulent banquet. Rich notes of dried cherries, blueberry, plums, and black tea entice the nose, accompanied by nuances of Sichuan pepper, toasted pumpkin seeds, and succulent roasted meat. The water-retaining limestone highlands bestow a lush richness upon the wine: its entrance is as smooth as silk, and its finish as resolute as a steel cable. Tasting this wine is akin to observing a gracefully cultivated warhorse, exquisitely balancing the delicate interplay between wildness and cultivation. This wine is the consummate companion for the sage, especially those "warriors" seeking solace after years of battles.

The 2022 Pavie-Macquin was picked 14 to 27 September at 31hL/ha. Black cherries, crème de cassis, crushed violets on the nose. This is the most opulent amongst Nicolas Thienpont's portfolio, though I find just a touch more terroir expression on the Larcis-Ducasse. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, satin-like in texture. A little more tertiary in its second half, with white pepper liberally-sprinkled toward the finish. Quite understated in style, I suspect it will spread its wings during its élevage.

Deep crimson. Fresh wood varnish wax polish aromas with dark plum, hint elderberry fruits. Oak dominant but well balanced and expressive wine with roasted chestnut, wax polish, cedar, dark plum, mulberry flavours, fine graphite tannins and fresh long mineral acidity. Slinky firm finish. (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Arodn 60% new oak)

Creamy depths of colour and flavour, powerful damson and black cherry fruits, this is utterly compelling and beautifully concentrated. No question that the tannins are crowding in through the front of the palate, eager to make an impression, but they quickly soften and widen, and in between is air, spice, flowers, just nuanced and beautiful. The power of limestone in hot vintages on display. 3.4ph, great stuff from this 14.5ha estate, Nicolas Thienpont director.

The 2022 Pavie Macquin, 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep garnet-purple in color. It is quite closed to start off, revealing scents of cedar chest and dried roses before giving way to a fragrant undercurrent of blackberry pie, Morello cherries, and boysenberry preserves, plus suggestions of Indian spices and cast-iron pan. The full-bodied palate is super-taut and muscular, delivering a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and fantastic tension to support all the tightly wound layers, finishing very long and minerally. Likely to require considerable patience before it hits its stride, its a Pavie Macquin for marathon runners, not sprinters.

Another wine that's going to flirt with perfection is the 2022 Château Pavie Macquin, and this might be the finest vintage I've ever tasted from this address. A blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals an inky purple hue as well as a stunning bouquet of pure cassis, liquid black raspberries, truffle, scorched earth, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, and massive on the palate, it may be the largest-scaled Pavie Macquin ever produced. But don't let that scare you off – it stays flawlessly balanced, has pure, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. I'll be a buyer. 96-98+

The 2022 Pavie Macquin is a gorgeous wine, not quite as exotic as it can be, which will no doubt please those who find this wine on the richer side within the context of Saint-Émilion. Dark red fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and spice all race across the palate. Given the small size of the berries and the heat, the winemaking team led by Nicolas Thienpont opted for gentler vinification with fewer punchdowns than the past. The result is a decidedly linear, vibrant Pavie Macquin that bristles with the chalky, saline energy that is a signature of this part of Saint-Émilion, but that has not always been present in a wine that in the past has been more about textural opulence. The blend is 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted four times. Drinking window : 2030-2052

Dark garnet in color, the wine offers its nose of cherry blossoms, licorice, black fruits, orange rind, olives, and tobacco leaf profile with ease. The perfect blend of power, elegance, and oceans of fruit, there is a beautiful balance, and harmony here. The opulent, silky fruits deliver purity, length, and freshness that is close to seamless. The sensations linger on the backend long after the wine has left the glass. The wine blends 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.7% ABV, 3.4 pH. The harvest took place September 14-September 20. Drink from 2027-2055.

This site can deliver such powerful, tannic wines that I was left especially impressed by the supple, harmonious style of the 2022 Pavie Macquin. Unwinding in the glass with notions of sweet wild berries, rose petals, spices, violets, bay leaf and new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and vibrant, with a layered core of fruit, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish, where powdery structuring tannins make themselves felt but without any asperity. Of course, this remains a deep and powerful wine, but Nicolas Thienpont and his team continue their shift toward more judicious extraction, with excellent results.
