Le très ancien château Lespault-Martillac est situé sur une superbe croupe de graves qui domine la commune de Martillac.

Depuis le millésime 2009, l’exploitation en est confiée au Domaine de Chevalier, Grand Cru Classé de Graves qui appartient à la famille Bernard. Ambition affichée par Olivier Bernard : révéler l’ampleur de son potentiel d’exception et confirmer sa vocation légitime à devenir l’un des joyaux de l’appellation.

Le millésime 2023

Nez de fruits mûrs aux arômes doux de cerise noire et de cacao. Le merlot marque son territoire ! Bouche ample et généreuse aux saveurs intenses. Ce vin est corpulent mais avec élégance. Sa structure de tanins souples, sa texture croquante et suave de fruits mûrs et frais font largement saliver. Finale fraîche, fruitée et épicée rappelant le nez. 5 à 10 ans de cave pour le parfaire.

The 2023 Lespault-Martillac, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, comfortably surpasses expectations formed at the en primeur stage. Unfurling in the glass with a gourmand, complex bouquet of cassis, mulberries, dark cherries and violet, discreetly shaped by oak, it is medium- to full-bodied, sapid and fleshy, built around a seamless core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, precise finish. Considerably less oaky than usual, it ranks among the finest renditions of this wine I have tasted.

The 2023 Lespault-Martillac Blanc waltzes out with flamboyant notes of honeysuckle, fresh white peaches, and lemon curd, plus hints of yuzu zest, lime leaves, and Marcona almonds. The medium-bodied palate is packed with stone fruit flavors, framed by a satiny texture and great tension, finishing long and fragrant. The blend is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon.

Coming from the gravelly soils around Léognan, the 2023 Château Lespault-Martillac offers ripe black cherries, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and spice nuances. It's medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, and balanced, with solid mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, beautiful purity and precision, and outstanding length. Give it a few years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades. Drink 2027-2045.

Round, soft, fresh, and fruity, with a strong floral essence, this earthy, tobacco-infused, forward, charming, creamy wine creates the heart and soul of this wine. It is already a pleasure to taste, and will provide pleasure for more than a decade from here. The wine is a blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2026-2039.

The 2023 Lespault-Martillac is an attractive, open-knit wine. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of bright red-toned fruit, pomegranate, blood orange and sweet spice. Soft and caressing, with fine balance, the 2023 is a terrific choice for drinking over the near and medium term. The supple finish is quite lovely. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Lespault-Martillac has a pleasant nose that opens in the glass: blackberry, cedar and black olive tapenade scents, the oak neatly enmeshed. (A second bottle at the château is a tad more exuberant.) The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Fine acidity, quite fresh and saline, though just a bit short on the finish. But overall, this should drink well for the next decade.

Tobacco, cedar and dried flowers, with subtle dark chocolate. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with crunchy fruit and a saline touch, carried by a rustic yet pleasant structure. The PV gives this some special character. Needs some aeration or a couple of years in the bottle. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 5% petite verdot. Drink or hold.

Red and black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and tobacco notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Lespault-Martillac, a quintessential Pessac that's medium-bodied and has a deep, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and outstanding length. The 2023 is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, aging in 35% new barrels.

Lush, round, chocolatey, and creamy, this is loaded with loads of dark, ripe, black, with fresh, red fruits backed with equally dark chocolate, and smoke. This is going to be delicious on release, and will be even better with some time in the cellar, as it will easily age for at least a decade or more. The wine blends 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. 14.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2039. 91-93 Pts.

Grilled coffee beans, capuccino and mocha, combined with intense dark fruits and solid tannic architecture. Pretty old school, but it's well done, good quality and with a ton of personality. In organic conversion, 35% new oak for ageing. Owned by Jean-Claude Bolleau but farmed and vinified entirely by the Bernard family of Domaine de Chevalier.

The 2023 Lespault-Martillac is a powerful, driving wine. Red cherry, plum, white pepper, mint, pomegranate, blood orange and a kick of sweet oak all run through this virile Pessac-Léognan. All this needs is élevage, which hopefully will soften the tough tannins. Overall, though, this feels a bit pushed. Tasted three times.

The 2023 Lespault-Martillac was picked from September 6 to 26. It has a ripe blackcurrant- and raspberry-scented bouquet, hints of iodine coming through with aeration. The Merlot is perhaps more expressive than the Cabernet, and floral lift comes courtesy of the Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush entry and saturated tannins, but there is a constant sense of restraint that imparts linearity. Subtle touches of white pepper furnish the finish, and it just needs a tad more sustain on the aftertaste. Give this 18 to 24 months in bottle.

A layered and rich young wine with a creamy texture and layers of velvety tannins. Pure and enticing, verging on opulent but holds back. The soft tannins are the most impressive thing. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot and 13% petit verdot.
