La Mondotte, un vin profondément marqué par son terroir

Les 4,5 hectares de La Mondotte, situés sur le plateau argilo-calcaire à l’est de Saint-Emilion, constituent un véritable écrin doté de tous les atouts naturels propices à l’élaboration d’un Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Les sols, constitués d’argiles très limoneuses, reposent sur un substrat rocheux. Cette structure de terroir, peu profonde et pauvre, engendre une excellente régulation hydrique et favorise l’enracinement profond de la vigne. Le drainage naturel, allié à l’ensoleillement exceptionnel dont bénéficie le vignoble, déterminent un terroir d’une grande précocité.
La qualité des argiles de La Mondotte, combinée à l’âge exceptionnel de ses vignes (60 ans en moyenne) donnent naissance à un vin profondément marqué par son terroir, un vin soyeux et puissant, à l’inégalable finesse, et d’une très grande minéralité.

Cette propriété datant du XIXème siècle est certifiée "Agriculture Biologique" depuis 2014.

Blueberries, dark chocolate, lavender and sage aromas follow through to a medium body with polished and refined tannins that are integrated but give a sense of strength and muscular tone. Elegance with structure. Closed now, it needs time to soften. Exceptional for the vintage. Better after 2028.

There is more volume here and a fierce attack of power and skin-derived tannin, which comes as a shock. Of course, La Mondotte always sits outside of the pack in the Comtes von Niepperg portfolio with its rippling muscles and devil may care attitude. In 2021, it seems a little more restrained, yet the fruit is still mineral soaked and palate scouring, making for a rather hectic ride. While I prefer the civility and apparent charms of Canon La Gaffelière, this is a fascinating wine and one to compare to its portfolio-mate in ten years. Which wine will you prefer then? I know where I have placed my bet. 18+

A brilliant wine in the making, I'd put the 2021 La Mondotte up with the crème de la crème from the Right Bank. Offering up terrific cassis, blueberry, and darker cherry fruits, it's medium to full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, terrific balance, and subtle floral and chalky mineral-like nuances. It brings way more density, depth, and texture than just about every other wine out there. Bravo.

Mr. Von Neipperg defines the 2021 vintage as the "contemporary classicism", a feature particularly expressed in La Mondotte. The outstanding ripeness gives La Mondotte its iconic aromas, with a mixture of jujube, waxberry, red plum, nutmeg, and star anise, even a hint of a peculiar freshness during the Chinese tea-making process. The palate is clean and delicate, supported by silky tannins and a mild saltiness. In my opinion, this wine not only exhibits how beautifully a limestone plateau can deliver in cool vintages but demonstrates the ancient Chinese philosophy, “the greatest virtue like pure water”. Flowers, black raspberries, broken stones, smoke, cherries and mint create the nose. On the palate, the wine is elegant, soft, refined, chalky, energetic, fresh and intense with layers of crisp, sweet, vibrant red pit fruits and a strong touch of salt on the backend. The wine blends 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc, 13% ABV. The harvest took place September 30 - October 10. Drink from 2026-2050. 94-96

The 2021 La Mondotte was cropped at 45hL/ha between 30 September and 6 October and matured in 50% new oak. Suave on the nose, it offers dark berry fruit, incense and subtle cassis scents, that are very well integrated. Much less powerful than the La Mondotte of old. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, juicy and ripe, well balanced with a silky smooth finish. Perhaps what is just missing is a little grip and density, but it is well-crafted and fresh as a daisy.

The 2021 La Mondotte is marked by strong calcaire accents and a bit of oak tannin that has not yet fully integrated, as the colder cellar here (vis-a-vis Canon-La Gaffelière) results in wines in barrel that evolve at a slow pace. Like all of the Neipperg wines, La Mondotte shows terrific energy and drive. A burst of dark cherry fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice builds into the deep, resonant finish. There's a ton of character here. The purity of the flavors is striking. I am so looking forward to tasting the 2021 in bottle.

Assemblages non réalisés. À la fois profond et fruité, le bouquet de La Mondotte 2021 est magnifique avec des notes de fruits noirs, de cassis, de réglisse, de graphite et floral à l'aération. Entrée de bouche calcaire avec de la rectitude, des tanins structurants, une belle trame acidulée et une finale aérienne et droite. Une belle bouteille où les élevages seront décisifs pour laisser toute la puissance tellurique du sol s'exprimer.

Unwinding in the glass with scents of cherry, sweet berries, dark chocolate and loamy soil, the 2021 La Mondotte is medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with a compact, tightly wound profile, tangy acids and beautifully refined tannins. Of all the von Neipperg wines, this is the most reticent at this early stage, but all the components for a notable success are present.

Lovely ripe raspberry and strawberry flavours with pink floral scents, really appealing aromatics jumping out the glass. Smooth and so vibrant, such vivacity, the brightness coming through strongly with such a brilliantly textured mid palate - it's silky but with concentration and intensity yet also an aerial feel to this. You got the depth and density without the weight. Crunchy, crisp, totally joyous. No hiding here, a pure expression. Not heavily structured but I love the energy, so fruity but also with a salinity on the finish that peaks the interest. One I definitely wanted another glass of. Gorgeous presentation of the terroir and the overall purity on show is commendable. No mildew or frost in 2021. A yield of 45hl/ha. Certified organic.
