L'Aventure Winery : lumière sur Paso Robles

Stephan Asseo, propriétaire et winemaker de L’Aventure Winery, a débuté dans le monde du vin en 1982. Il rachète avec sa famille le Château Fleur Cardinale et le Château Robin dans les Côtes de Castillon à Bordeaux. Pendant 15 ans, Stephan œuvre dans les vignes et se fait connaître pour son esprit d'innovation. Il porte un rêve en lui, celui de sortir des carcans de l’AOC et commence à voyager en quête d’un lieu idéal pour cela. En 1997, après une année de recherche, sa famille et lui tombent amoureux d'un terroir unique à l'ouest de Paso Robles. En 1998, l’Aventure est lancée!

Estate Cuvée est le vin phare de L’Aventure, issu d’une sélection des meilleurs raisins du domaine. C'est pour cette raison que Stephan a quitté Bordeaux : créer un assemblage "fou" et haut de gamme à Paso Robles. Profondeur, équilibre, texture, complexité, finale, tout est là. C'est une magnifique expression de son terroir. Pour le millésime 2021, la famille Asseo célèbre les 20 ans d'Estate Cuvée avec une étiquette bleue spéciale.

This is the 20th-anniversary release, and it was one of the wines of the entire event. It was sensational, with everything I could possibly desire in a big, ripe, regal red wine. Made from 50% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot, I cannot underline just how complete and rewarding the flavour is here.

Inky plum colour, medium to full intensity. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot dominant for the first 10 minutes in the glass, with sleek silky tannins, bilberry, blackcurrant, cocoa bean, espresso, fennel, then as it relaxes the floral red roses, white pepper and raspbery leaf of Syrah arrive. Beautiful concentration coupled with pummice stone minerality, will reward ageing but everything is in place to give pleasure straight away. Excellent quality. The 20th anniversary of the flagship Estate Cuvée - and the last one under this name, as it will be changing to Estate Reserve as of the 2022 vintage. 90% new oak for ageing. Winemaker Chloé Asseo.

(Paso Robles; 50% Syrah; 30% Cabernet Sauvignon; 20% Petit Verdot; 14.9% alcohol; 20^th anniversary bottling in blue; tasted with Swann Dufeu from L’Aventure at CVBG). A slightly cooler vintage overall. Selected from the very best parcels. Plump, plush; rich and plummy. Damson; black raspberry; a little blueberry too; a hint of sloe. Lithe. More ample and rolling. Big textured and nicely layered. Dense but beautifully crystalline. A pleasing note of cedar, a little pine resin and acacia too. A hint of eucalyptus. Ethereal and quite vertical and lifted despite the palpable mid-palate density. Incense, tinder box, sweet spices and black pepper. Granular on the finish, this is a big, punchy wine with lovely crumbly limestone tannins once again. Hedonistic on the attack, but fresher on the finish.

The L’Aventure vineyard is one of the sources of quality fruit in Paso, and this wine is no exception. Aromas of dark, jammy fruit dominate, and the fruit on the palate is equally assertive, with healthy doses of cedar and spice. Tannins are muscular and powdery, which will aid in the ageability – a full-bodied, authoritative Paso wine with quality at the foundation.

Balance is the key, as this portfolio exhibits both power and prestige. The Estate Cuvée is a blend of 45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot that overdelivers in this rich and racy vintage, yet be warned, it’s best to practice patience. This wine is stacked for the long term."

The 2021 Estate Cuvée sports a blue label signifying its 20th anniversary. It's darkly floral and stoney upon opening with notes of dusty sage, black earth and currants. This is deeply textural, velvety and supple, like molten chocolate. It flows across the palate, saturating with its intense red and black fruits while taking on graphite mineral tones and hints of exotic spice. Classically structured and long, this leaves a pleasantly bitter tinge and licorice under an air of violet inner florals. Bury the 2021 Estate Cuvée deep in the cellar.

The 2021 Estate Cuvée (a 20th-anniversary edition) is composed of 50% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot. Its aromas are highly complex and pure! Chocolate-covered cherry and crushed blueberry scents are complemented by wafts of thyme, sage, vanilla, dark spices and savory tones, plus soaring violet perfume. The full-bodied palate is polished and effortlessly balanced, offering powdery tannins, a bright spine of acidity and a tremendously long finish laced with spice and floral perfume. This elegant, expressive blend will be long lived in the cellar.

Immediately seductive and perfumed on the nose with aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, cassis, violets, cedar and plenty of sweet oak spices. It's full-bodied with knit-tight tannins and a velvety texture. Spicy and vibrant with poise. Good vitality with a controlled power all along. Concentrated and full of energy with a generous, peppery and berry-loaded finish. 50% syrah, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% petit verdot. Try after 2026.

Pure perfection from this talented team, the 2021 Estate Cuvee checks in as 50% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Petit Verdot that was raised in 80% new French oak. Absolutely incredible aromatics of crème de cassis, blueberries, violets, ground pepper, and graphite give way to a full-bodied red with a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, a deep, layered mid-palate, and that rare mix of power and elegance that's so hard to come by. It shows the pure, layered, elegant style of the vintage, and this beauty offers pleasure today yet will ideally be given 3-4 years in the cellar, and it will evolve for two decades at a minimum.
