Coming from younger vines (there’s some old vine Merlot), the 2017 La Petite Marquise is a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon that’s still aging in 30% new French oak. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color, beautiful notes of ripe plum and assorted dark fruits, lots of salty minerality, and a plump, rounded, balanced style. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate and is well worth your time.

The 2017 La Petite Marquise is a very attractive, open-knit Saint-Julien to drink upon release for several years thereafter. Soft and supple in its construction, the Petite Marquise is a very pretty second wine. Blueberry jam, menthol, lavender and spice notes fill out the wine's mid-weight frame effortlessly. This is quite lovely. The blend is 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon.Tasted two times.

Forward in style, this wine is all about the core of sugar dusted, freshly plucked cherries and charmingly glib tannins. Medium bodied, it will drink quite well upon release.

The 2017 La Petite Marquise du Clos du Marquis, which comes from younger vines plus in this year some Merlot deselected from the Grand Vin, was matured in 30% new oak. It delivers quite a forthright bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry confit and cedar, a hint of blood orange in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, rounded in texture, quite fleshy for the 2017 vintage with a harmonious, smooth, almost plush finish driven by the Merlot. Delicious. Tasted twice and shows better the second time.

This is the second wine of Léoville Las Cases' Clos du Marquis. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 La Petite Marquise is scented of blackberries, mulberries and cassis with asphalt and damp soil hints. Medium-bodied, chewy and a little tart, it gives delicate flavors and a savory finish.

This has a little more Merlot than in the last two vintages because it suffered more than the Cabernet from the September rains, and consequently less was used in the Clos du Marquis itself. The vines weren't affected by frost, and yields were healthy at 37hl/ha. Even at this level, the St-Julien balance is on display, the quality of the tannins is refined and soft, and overall the wine has a lot to say. It's not powerful by any means, but those black fruits have form and energy - so it's a buy for me. 30% new oak and 20% of overall production in this.
