Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Marquis de Calon-Segur has a lot of chocolaty new oak on the nose that detracts from any terroir expression—it could be from anywhere. The palate is medium-bodied with tough tannin on the entry, moderate weight, but a dry, austere finish. Tasted January 2016.

The second wine of Calon Segur, the 2012 Marquis de Calon, is very good. Deep ruby/purple with lots of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, subtle background earthiness, medium body, nice texture and overall balance, this should drink well young and continue to evolve for up to a decade.

A spicy, meaty red with berry character and hints of mahogany. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a juicy finish. Outstanding second wine for the vintage. Better in 2017.

The two wines at Château Calon-Ségur are markedly different, owing to their varietal make up. The Merlot that dominates the second wine has none of the rigour of the grand vin. Sweet, plump and appealingly forward, this shows hints of orange peel and Asian spices and very well integrated oak. Drink: 2018-26

Fruits confits, vanille, fraise au sucre, moelleux, sucrosité. Structure moins élégante que celle du grand vin, milieu de bouche moins raffiné, mais très gourmand. Une gourmandise. O= 2015 G= 10 ans.

Tasted as a barrel sample at the château. Representing around 45% of production, the Marquis de Calon is a blend 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a ripe nose of strawberry and raspberry preserve that should be very approachable once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins. It is bold and brassy with crisp acidity, although it clearly does not have the complexity of the Grand Vin on the finish. Tasted April 2013.

Medium body, wine fine tannins and an attractive backbone of fruit and tannins. Medium finish. Nicely done for the second wine of Calon Segur in this vintage. 69% Merlot, rest Cabernet Sauvignon.
