The 2018 Pierre 1er has a very rich, rather over-the-top bouquet with just a bit of volatility. The palate is sweet and chewy with dense black toasty fruit, but there is a lack of freshness and delineation on the finish that does not urge me back for more.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Pierre 1er gives expressive blackberries, black cherries and warm plums scents with touches of cloves, mocha and sautéed herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, fine-grained texture and appealing freshness with a savory finish.

The polish and integration to this is impressive with purity of fruit and brightness, too. Medium body. Fruity and very clean and focused. Will be beautiful in bottle.

The 2018 Pierre 1er is bold, potent and full of character. Iron, smoke, red plum, licorice and white pepper give the 2018 its distinctive feral, earthy feel. This pleasantly rustic Saint-Émilion has quite a bit to offer, once the sinewy tannins soften. Tasted two times.

Great red berry fruits come in on the opener, but the tannins swoop in fast and close in on the finish. Its firm, bright fruits are a little austere. You can certainly feel the difficulty in walking the tightrope in this vintage. Harvest began on 19 September, with a good yield of 43hl/ha. 33% new oak, with integral vinification for 25% of the crop. Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud consult.
