Nez puissant et impérial, grand fruit très mûr, minéralité, épices, boisé harmonieux et bien à sa place, bouche dense, profonde, montrant une belle ossature tannique, une grande vigueur. Très imposant, équilibré, fait pour durer.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Pape-Clement has a comparatively feminine nose with lifted macerated dark cherries, cassis, briary and a touch of vanilla from the oak. It has lovely delineation and purity. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, rounded tannins. This is a "big" wine, but it manages to retain fine balance and the lingering sweet finish is very convincing. It needs several years in the cellar, but it has so much potential. Although the 2009 Pape Clement may not be as sublime as the 2005 or 2000, but it is very close to those two efforts, and it will be fascinating to compare them (as well as the 2008 and 2010) over the following three decades. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc with a modest 13.5% alcohol, the 2009 reveals considerable structure and tannin along with tell-tale notes of burning embers, scorched earth, graphite, blueberries, blackberries and toasty vanillin, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. This rich, full offering is surprisingly backward. This cuvee should drink well in 5-6 years as one rarely has to wait a decade or more to enjoy Pape Clement. It should age for three decades or more.

Rich and muscular, with exotic roasted spice, braised fig and warm raspberry confiture notes that are supported by a broad baseline of dark cocoa, tar and freshly brewed espresso. Not shy about its modernity, but everything is in place. Just needs to settle in with cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2030. -J.M

Pape-Clément s’était démarqué ces dernières années par sa concentration : le millésime 2009 marque un tournant avec un vin beaucoup plus élégant que d’habitude, très harmonieux, mais les tannins ne sont pas loin, la concentration non plus, ce qui est un gage d’une belle évolution dans le temps. La robe est très sombre et le nez un peu réduit, mais très fin à l’aération. En bouche, le vin est souple, assez harmonieux, avec des tannins bien présents mais d’une grande finesse, le vin n’est pas très corpulent, il affiche beaucoup d’élégance et de longueur. Un des plus fins de l’histoire. 60 % cabernet-sauvignon, 40 % merlot.

Ruby-purple. Vibrant blackcurrant, blackberry and smoke aromas show noteworthy depth and purity. Big and ripe on the palate, but with lovely balance to its black fruit and smoke flavors. The very long, pure finish features a lingering mineral streak and very fine tannins. This exceptional vintage of Pape Clement packs an amazing amount of concentration on a seemingly weightless frame. More important still, although it pushes the ripeness envelope as most of the wines of Bernard Magrez do, it manages to come across as refined and graceful, even though it's almost brutally powerful.

Sattes Purpur-Granat. Intensives, warmes Bouquet, Amarenakirschen, exotische Edelhölzer, Kaffee, Zedern und dominikanischer Tabak, weniger kraftvoll vinifiziert als in den Vorjahren. Samtig-seidiger Gaumen, viel Souplesse in den recht fetten Tanninen, Cassis, Kokos und Nusspralinen im gebündelten Finale. Ein recht erotischer Pessac! Viermal verkostet: zweimal auf 18/20-Niveau, die beiden besseren Eindrücke bei: 2018-2038

100% de bois neuf avec des fermentations malolactiques en barriques. Comme pratiquement dans toutes les propriétés où c'était possible, le cabernet sauvignon a été privilégié (60% de l'assemblage). Les macérations longues (jusqu'à 42 jours) ont été conduites avec habilité, car les tanins sont fins et bien polymérisés (fondus).

Ultra mûr, pulpeux, coloré et séveux, avec un boisé qui part un peu dans tous les sens, mais dont nous savons par l’expérience des dix derniers millésimes qu’il ne trahit jamais la noble matière du terroir. C’est une esthétique de prise d’échantillon précoce, faite pour plaire au plus grand nombre, dont ce cru si justement célèbre pourrait se passer.

Tasted at the chateau. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, cropped at 43hl/ha between 24th September and 21st October, this Pape-Clement has a ripe, how shall I say, almost “feline” nose that seems to purr with class. Very fine delineation and very focused. Just a touch of tobacco developing in the glass. The palate is full-bodied, dense and very weighty, bold but firm tannins, a more masculine Pape-Clement and beautifully balanced towards the finish. Very pure with a cool, refined finish. This is sophisticated and classy. Tasted April 2010.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Pape Clement is not as dense or provocative as the 2005, but it is a worthy competitor. Tighter and more muscular than the 2005, the 2009 reveals an opaque purple color along with notes of graphite, blueberries, and blackberries, stunning richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and tremendous length and intensity. Some patience will be required, and I do not believe this effort will achieve the near perfection of the 2005, but it is another winner in this extraordinary vintage. Yields were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine finished around 13.5% alcohol. (Tasted four times.) Historically one of the oldest vineyards in Bordeaux (having once been owned by Pope Clement, who gets more credit for what he did in Chateauneuf du Pape than in Graves), this 700-year old Pessac vineyard has turned out another profound wine under the administration of proprietor Bernard Magrez. The stunning Pape Clément is another terrific wine for Bernard Magrez's brand. Its opaque purple hue precedes big notes of crème de cassis, blueberry, lead-pencil, blue flower, and crushed charcoal perfumes. A beauty in this vintage boasting savory flavor, a full-body, density, and a concentrated mouth-feel. Luxurious richness of black cherry and blackberry is combined with elegance and lingering nuances. There is a greater degree of definition in this vintage. Maturity period 2016-2032.

There's lovely density and beauty to this young wine, with tobacco, light vanilla, chocolate and ripe fruit. Full and polished, with velvety tannins. Long and reserved, but very, very serious.
