This vintage had exceptional growing conditions with a good spring, a very early and generous flowering in the beginning of June without any of the flowering mishaps that such as coulure and millerandage. while July, August and September were extremely hot, sunny and drought-like. The harvest started on September 14 and was completed on September 29. The final blend for the 1982 Montrose was relatively classic, and this wine, never one of my favorites of the vintage, shows plenty of brick at the edge, a big, spicy, oaky nose with oak in the background, notes of Chinese black tea, new saddle leather and unsmoked cigar tobacco, as well as red and black currants. It is medium-bodied, elegant, and fully mature. By no means one of the stars of the vintage, it is also quite spicy. Drink over the next 10-15 years.

Intense aromas of kirsch, currant and spice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with round, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This is complex, changing on the nose and palate. Layered and structured. Will still improve for many years to come.

A deep ruby/purple color with garnet in the middle is followed by fragrant aromas of roasted herbs, briny olives, saddle leather, and steak tartare. With a round, sweet entry, medium to full body, a supple, fat mid-palate, and a diffuse but glycerin-dominated, thick, juicy finish, this wine suggests full maturity, but is capable of lasting another 10-15 years.

Balanced and harmonious. Dark ruby-garnet. Fresh cherry and cinnamon aromas. Full-bodied and very fruity, with a good backbone of tannins and a long, spice, berry and cedar finish. Can age, but why wait?--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now.

I underrated this wine when young, and I would now like to set the record straight. Recent bottles have been stunning, although I am surprised by how forward, delicious, and complex the 1982 Montrose has become. This rapid developing Montrose remains a candidate for another 20+ years of cellaring. The wine reveals a healthy dark ruby/garnet color, followed by a fragrant, sweet nose of black fruits intermingled with new oak and floral scents. Full-bodied and opulent with dusty tannin in the finish, this gorgeously-proportioned, rich, concentrated wine can be drunk now or held for two decades. It is a very impressive example of Montrose that is atypically evolved and forward. Last tasted 8/97.

This is the best wine Montrose made between 1970 and the legendary wines of 1989 and 1990. The 1982 has reached full maturity at a surprisingly young age. The color has taken on some amber at the edge. The nose offers up dusty, curranty aromas intermingled with the smells of wet stones, minerals, spices, and black fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration and supple, expansive, chewy fleshiness, this large-scaled, low acid Montrose should last for another 10-15 years. Last tasted, 2/93.
